Being a third year student nurse I wish I had discovered this book at the beginning of my degree. This is a fantastic book for any nursing student!! The book is broken into six units, these consist of; The body as a whole, Support and movement, Communication, Control and Intergration, Transportation and Defence, Respiration Nutrition and Excretion and Reproduction and Development. Each of these units are broken down into chapters and literally covers everything you will need to know.
Don't be put off by the size of the book, or the amout of information it contains as the book it self is easy to read. There is a huge amount of coloured pictures throughout and text is spilt into easy to read paragraphs, so even though it really does cover everything, you do not have the feeling of being bombarded with information. The language used throughout is easy to understand. Throughout the chapters there are 'quick checks' which are questions that are there just to test your knowledge and to ensure you understand the information.
At the end of each chapter is a summary, this consists of words that you will have encountered thoughout that chapter and the definition of these. There are also case studies with questions to check your understanding of the topics covered. The chapter summary also has a brief over view of what was explained in the actual chapter which I feel acts as a refresher of what you have read.
The book, as I have mentioned contains numerous pictures throughout, but it also has a cross section of the body which is on laminated paper, and has you turn each page you see the next section of the body. For example going from the muscle section to the inner organs. All of these are labelled and is a great way in being able to 'work out' where everything goes and what belongs where.
The copy I have also came with an atlas to the human body which is a booklet that goes through the entire human body using pictures and labelling every part, this again makes an excellent revision aid and can be used with the book to identify what parts of the body actually look like. Also their relation to the rest of the body.
Having nearly finished my degree now, I have ended up using several A and P books due to either having ones which are too advanced or too basic for what I needed. However, this book is perfect, it covers everything, but due to its layout and the way it is written you are able to use as much or as little information as you require, without feeling overwhelmed.
I would without a doubt recommend this book as it will see you throughout your course and makes a brilliant revision aid.
