More About the Author

Francesca Gould was born in Bath, England, although has lived most of her life in Bristol. Her passion for health, beauty and fitness led to a career in teaching before becoming an author. She believes that stress and an unhealthy diet is largely responsible for poor health and accelerating the aging process; this led her to study for a Food and Nutrition BSc degree at Bath Spa University. A proud moment in her career as a writer was when, in 2008, her trivia book 'Why is Yawning Contagious?' made it into the New York times bestseller list.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book for the Basics 4 Oct 2002
I am undertaking training to become a massage therapist and found this book on Amazon totally by accident looking for something else - I'm glad I found it. This book is a great tool if you need to understand the basics straight away, as I found it was clearly written and it doesn't confuse by blinding you with anatomical jargon. The crossword puzzles at the back of the book make studying and revising far more fun and the information you need sticks in your mind this way. As a basic book, this one is one of the best.

As a reflexology student I bought this book mainly as a revision aid as it was only published towards the end of my course. I found it a really useful book as I had previously found it difficult to find an anatomy and physiology book of exactly the right level. It is written in easily understood language with clear illustrations and diagrams. The tests and crosswords throughout the book were excellent for checking my knowledge and helping me focus on those areas requiring further study. I would highly recommend this book to anyone studying a complementary therapy.

5.0 out of 5 stars 8 out of 10 ITEC A&P students preferred it 17 Jun 2008
I teach the ITEC A&P qualification and know only too well how difficult it is to find a text book written at the level required to support the course and syllabus (A level).

I have used the Louise Tucker book for the last four years but it lacks decent illustrations and contains a shocking number of mistakes, even after a trillion editions - its biggest critism.

However I aim to use this book for the next academic year, after I discovered it too late for this year's students. It is written in a simple easy-to-read manner with plenty of activities such as labelling diagrams, which may seem a bit 'play school' to some, but are a proven technique to successful learning and retention of information. It may not fully support the ITEC syllabus but neither does any other text book.

A useful book for anyone studying ITEC or wishing to self-educate on the workings of the human body.

Although a very basic book, it explains everything without technical jargon. Very good quality diagrams. Throughout the book there are several tasks to test yourself. I particularly liked the fact that you can look up all the answers on the internet. The book claims to contain everything you'll need if you are following the Diploma in Holistic Therapies (VTCT) and other basic Anatomy and Physiology courses. If that is the case, then this book is well worth having.

Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I am studying Aromatherapy and Massage and found this book helped me get through the A&P modules successfully. It is clear, concise with very helpful diagrams and 'colouring' workpages to reinforce information you have just read. I found it invaluable as a reference point and it made it much easier to approach other more 'technical' A&P textbooks as it gives you a basic but solid understanding. Well worth adding to the library, particularly if you are studying holistic therapies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book! 30 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Extremely glad I purchased this book from Amazon. I am studying beauty therapy and was not looking forward to the A&P part, a lot of books that I have looked at buying were very long winded, technical and make you want to put them down! This is simple, clear, and tells you the basic facts without too much detail, but I feel that it covers the essentials. There are some parts of the book that offer you "revision" by crosswords and questions, which I haven't done, but a good of way of learning if it works for you! Very good author and very good book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Super Studying! 7 Dec 2010
As a newcomer to the world of biology and massage, I found this book extremely helpful, easy to understand, neatly and well laid out (some books have extremely small and tightly printed text, it makes me feel unorganized and claustrophobic). The book has many easy understandable illustrations, tasks and crosswords to assist in the learning process and, a lot of color- which really steers the book away from being boring. Most importantly, I get excited when it's almost time to turn to a new page... which clearly indicates that I am loving it. Maybe not recommended for the experienced professional, but definitely for students and for lecturers looking for some great coursework! After having purchased this book, I have also ordered 3 more titles by Francesca Gould.

I bought 'Anatomy & Physiology for Holistic Therapists' to help with the A&P part of my Swedish massage course. I turned out to not be the set course text but equally as good. I must admit to not using it very much as a text book but more as a revision guide. The course materials supplied by the college were more than sufficient & it was very much an interactive learning environment, so the book was great for home study & exam refreshing/revision. It's a very active & engaging text.

The Chapters are as follows:

Chapter 1: Cells
Chapter 2: The Skin
Chapter 3: The Skeletal System
Chapter 4: Muscles
Chapter 5: The Circulatory Systems
Chapter 6: The Respiratory & Olfactory Systems
Chapter 7: The Nervous System
Chapter 8: The Endocrine System
Chapter 9: The Digestive System
Chapter 10: The Reproductive System
Chapter 11: The Urinary System

The course was 12 weeks long & it was exactly sufficient to study all these systems as A&P is like the 'lite' version of say A'Level Human Biology. It was an amazingly interesting & enjoyable subject, especially when coupled with the practical massage lessons which linked all the knowledge together & made it much easier to learn. It is worth doing the activities in the book into a note book so that when you come to revise for the final exam you can guage exactly where your strengths & weaknesses are.
