Product Description

Product Description

The history of Admiral Horatio Nelson has been written from every possible angle, but this was not so with his ships. Not until this work was first published in 1961. Before then, such information as there was about the ships was buried in archives on Naval Architecture; only the top expert could have sifted it and present it in a usable form, Dr Longridge was that expert, and his work became a veritable treasure trove for every naval historian and ship modeller. His research is supported by 271 detailed line drawings, rare photographs and fold-out plans showing hull framing, interior construction, complexing and deck layouts

This proved to be an excellent reference book containing many useful technical details about the shipbuilding of the time but I felt it was possibly slightly misleading in its title. It is true the book covers the methods / timbers / rigging of captial ships of the period it is very much concentrating on the specific task of modelling HMS Victory ( as indeed the author has done, producing the unrivalled model of 'Victory' displayed in the Science museum ) Nevertheless there is a lot of information within this volume not to be found elsewhere, and a significant proportion of its readers are likely to be interested in the model building aspect which I personally found fascinating. If you are looking for specifications and information on all ships of the period I would look elsewhere, if you are interested in HMS Victory and similar ships and also in modelling then this volume is unbeatable.

If you want to get to the point where you can understand the conversation Jack Aubrey is having with his boatswain and his carpenter rather than just enjoying the historical feel of it, then this book is going to do it for you.

(Well it did it for me!)

This is THE book for HMS Victory. Despite it's age, not only is it extensively detailed, but written in a lucid language supported by clear, profuse illustrations. Compared to others, this book not only tells you what and how, but why too. The opening chapter, with it's detailed description of how the ships were made, is a clever summary of the whole book and sets the tone. Granted he used the HMS victory as an example, but I found his descriptions extrapolatable. For a period ship enthusiast and any ship modeller interested in this period, this volume is a must have.
