A true Classic, 1 Dec 2008
This review is from: The Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard - A Study in Leadership (Hardcover)
Ever since I first bought this volume back in 1964 it has been one of my most treasured items along with Espisito and Eltings "Atlas of the Napoleonic Wars" and "Campaigns of Napoleon" a trilogy of books I reccomend as the primary start to any Napoleonic collection.
Sumptious colour details of many of the Guards uniforms coupled with a lively and entertaining text which goes into much detail of the early formations and goes on to tell the tale of the "La Guards" expantion and combat history.
It is written in such a style as to make you wish you too could utter the words of the old "Grongard" when a rumour of Napoleons return from St Helena reached his village, when his wife asked where he was off to his reply-- " To HIM " .

Dissapointing, 14 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard - A Study in Leadership (Hardcover)
I thought of this book as the best book on the Imperial Guard and I was really disappointed when I got it. This is a huge book, full of details and figures, that does not tell the history of the guard. It is not a narration but only an enumeration of facts and figures. The appendix on tactics is developed in a couple of pages.

the anatomy of glory, 23 Mar 2011
This review is from: The Anatomy of Glory: Napoleon and His Guard - A Study in Leadership (Hardcover)
i have read hundreds of books about napoleon, waterloo, peninsula wars,
and have a substantial library myself. I first saw the anatomy of glory
in a friends collection about thirty years ago, since then i have not been
able to aquire it,until recently from amazon.I have found it a great read ,full of interesting statistics on the imperial guard through its
history, on and off the battlefield. It is a must for napoleonic freaks, and the excellent prints will be of assistance to all who have
an interest in french military uniforms of this period and people who
enjoy researching and painting military migurines.I hope you enjoy this
book as much as i did,and i know i will enjoy reading it yet again over
a period of time.just as a matter of interest, some years ago my wife
and i where strolling along a street in Paris when I spotted a brass
napoleonionic eagle on a house across the street we crossed the street
and on a plate on tne wall was written this was the house of commandant
henry lachouque. enjoy mike.
