'Anastasia: The mystery of Anna' is a biopic of Anna Anderson, the woman who claimed all her life that she was Grand Duchess Anastasia - the last survivor of the Romanov family. It's not a very accurate or hard-hitting drama, but it does capture the charm and romance that makes the story of Anastasia so irresistable. Amy Irving gives a classic performance as the mysterious upper-class lady who may be Anastasia - what is wonderful is we never know for certain who she really is, but by the end she has so utterly 'become' Anastasia that it no longer matters, and I think that this is true of Anna Anderson in real life.

Amy Irving is flanked by an all-star cast, although most (e.g Omar Sharif and Claire Bloom) have surprisingly small roles. The screenplay lacks the sort of detail that would make an intelligent drama, it's light entertainment but it's fun and the whole mystery around the beautiful Anna/Anastasia keeps it going. There is a very cheesy sub-story which is all about Anna's romance with the fictional 'Prince Eric' - it's made up and very Mills & Boon sort of stuff, however it fits in with the rest of the drama. It's not great but I like it, a lavish and indulgent drama that celebrates the legend of Anastasia and not the pain and misery of historical fact.

...TV movie recounts the life of Anna Anderson, who until the day she died at age 82 insisted that she was really Anastasia Romanov, daughter of Czar Nicholas. Anna first makes her claim in 1920, when she is an inmate in a Berlin asylum. Her story of escape from the Bolsheviks who killed the rest of her family in 1918 seems so vivid that many Russian expatriates are willing to believe her. The film concludes in 1928, with Anna restating her claim before the surviving Romanovs living in New York. Amy Irving plays the leading character in a lady-or-the-tiger fashion, so that we never know if she truly swallows her own tale or if she's merely a clever charlatan. Olivia DeHavilland, Rex Harrison, Claire Bloom, Omar Sharif and Susan Lucci co-star in this opulent, location-filmed production, which originally aired on December 7 and 8, 1986.
what can I say?
Superb telling of the legendary story with excellent cast.
.with Amy Irving gives what is probably one of the finest performances of her career.
Others around her are equally impressive: Rex Harrison, Olivia de Havilland, Omar Shariff, Jan Niklas , Susan Lucci,Christian Bale ,Edward Fox ,
Elke Sommer,and Claire Bloom

The epic story begins with the start of the revolution and the exile of the family of Nicolas and Alexandra.
After fleeing execution, the story follows Anastasia's years of struggle to regain her royal heritage--and the opposition of forces around her who call her an imposter.

Winner of two Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and much acclaim from critics and public upon its video showing .
.Anastasia" is one of those rare TV movies that you simply must watch for the sheer enjoyment of watching the finest acting.
.and is also what I call ?
A Very Glittering Television Adaptation,

The mystery as to whether the Grand Duchess Anastasia, youngest daughter of the last Tsar of Russia, survived the dreadful events of July 1918, was debated for nearly a century.

One night in 1922, a young woman jumped into a canl in Berlin. Rescued and taken to a local assylum, she became the focus of great interest after a fellow inmate that she was certain that here was the Grand Duchess Anastasia. 'The Patient' (as she was known) eventually became convinced that she was indeed the Grand Duchess and that she had been rescued after the massacre of her family. Neither the Imperial family in exile or, indeed, the family of the late Tsarina in Germany, were taken in by the story and a long court battle ensued for 40 years. Known as Anna Anderson, the lady lived for many years in Germany but ended her life in America as the wife of a doctor. The mystery continued after Anna Anderson's death in 1984, until DNA examination finally brought the story to a conclusion by determining that she was in fact a Polish factory woker.

This DVD gives a fairly romanticised version of the story up to the start of the court case and is an enjoyable way to spend three hours or so. It does not have the fairytale ending of the famous Ingrid Bergman film of the same name made in 1956, but does lead one to believe that, but for her death, the Dowager Empress would have received the imposter. This was never the case. For anyone who enjoys the stories of Danielle Steele etc., this is one not to be missed (although this film is based on a serious study of the case).

Rex Harrison excels as the Grand Duke Cyril, with Olivia De Haviland's Dowager Empress proving an excellent foil. Amy Irvine is excellent as the hapless Annastasia and Omar Shariff and Claire Bloom are excellent as Tsar Nicholas and Tsarina Alexandra.

I would recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys a good story or has an interest in what many have termed "The Mystery of The Cemtury".
