Book Description

Flawed beauty laid bare in this tense, heated, compelling novel for teenagers.

Product Description

Fifteen-year-old Samson Ashburner has always felt like an outsider - even before the accident that left his face scarred and his confidence shattered. With the jeers and taunts of the local children and his mother ringing in his ears, Samson malingers like a dark cloud over the Cumbrian landscape. His only refuge is his ancestor's charcoal-burning hut deep in the nearby woods and it is here that he encounters Angel Obscura, a gypsy girl who teachers Samson that not everybody takes him at face value. But Angel is not all that she seems, and Samson is drawn into a web of deceit and shady dealings with an explosive outcome.

Gareth Thompson, has had his third novel `The Anarchist's Angel,' published.

His first book, `The Great Harlequin Grim', was published in 2006 and last year his second book, `Sunshine to the Sunless,' was published and has been nominated for the 2009 Carnegie Medal.

His new book is once again a very enjoyable read and I think his novels should be made into films.

`The Anarchist's Angel' is again set in Cumbria, and centres around teenager Samson Ashburner, the son of a publican who finds he does not fit in well with the local children.

This is made worse after an accident that leaves his face scarred. This forces him to spend all his time in an old charcoal-burning hut in the nearby woods - the only place where he feels wanted or at peace.

But the outside world won't stop intruding, and a new landowner threatens Samson's refuge, while a gypsy girl, Angel Obscura, shows him that not everyone looks only at the surface.

I think we will be hearing much more from the pen of Mr Thompson and this up an coming author will soon be a household name.

Thompson's ability to thread a good story through a mesh of contemporary issues, all within a very real setting was established in his early novels, but this is the best so far.

Because he's unsentimental, he's able to treat teenage angst about relationships, self-image, parents, conservation and the morality of the adult world - the whole can of worms - with credibility, seriousness and yet a necessary lightness of touch. Whether it's important for it all to be so specifically rooted in identifiable places is open to question (although it's in a strong tradition) but it should tempt the filmakers... in fact, I look forward to seeing the film...who's got the rights?
