He studied sitar with Dr Lalmani Mishra in Banaras at the Hindu University. In the late sixties he travelled to the West Coast of America when the flower power generation was in full swing. 5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate funk... 1 Feb 2004
By "dr_vk"
Format:Audio CD
The original Indian funk album, and still the best. From the obvious cross-over joy of Jumpin' Jack Flash to the harmonious beauty of the last Hindu hymn, this album encapsulates in 10 tracks the understated genius of Ananda Shankar that previously was only available to those able to track down the vanishingly rare original 70's vinyl albums...
The album veers from get-up funk to the finest chill-out music and never drops below the sublime. Forget the new wave of Asian underground... go back to source.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ananda Ahankar 27 Jan 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It was with Emperor Rosco's help that I located this ! He used Jumping Jack Flash as the theme to his Radio 1 show, 'Roundtable' in the Seventies. The whole album is incredible and gets played to death here!

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and best fusion 9 Nov 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is one of the earliest (and best) attempts at fusing Indian and western musical styles and even today it does not sound dated. The first tracks are version of some classic rock songs with some sitar in the mix, but others are more traditionally Indian in structure (e.g. folk or Hindustani classical). 'Snow Flower' is based on a Bengali tune and 'Sagar' is (I think) in raga Malkauns. Ananda Shanakar was a fine sitar player (a nephew of Ravi) and a musician who could seamlessly assimilate both western and eastern musical ideas.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of east meets west 20 Feb 2014

My favourite of the early seventies but it's still up there today as one of the best pieces of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ananda Shankar's first album - a classic 16 Aug 2013
Format:Audio CD
I was brought up on a reel-to-reel tape recorder and it wasn't until 1970 that I got my first record turntable. Ananda Shankar was the first LP I bought after hearing 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' on the radio. It is and will always be a classic. I never get tired of listening to it. Wonderful.
