Amazon.co.uk Review

Analyze That has more bada bing than its lukewarm box office reception would lead you to expect. Analyze This (1999) had the advantage of a then-fresh idea--Robert De Niro as a neurotic mob boss seeking therapy with reluctant shrink Billy Crystal--but that idea's stale (and has been handled more authentically in The Sopranos), so this sequel relies on established chemistry and zesty dialogue that matches the original. There's nothing wrong with a retread when it's this funny, and De Niro's latter-day penchant for comedy suits him well when, as kingpin Paul Vitti, he lures Dr Sobel (Crystal) into a prison breakout scheme involving faked catatonia and West Side Story show tunes. The contrived plot involves Vitti's criminal comeback. Unfortunately, there's little room for Lisa Kudrow as Sobel's sarcastic wife, but De Niro's Raging Bull co-star Cathy Moriarty-Gentile is welcomed as a rival mob queen. You want a comedy masterpiece? Fuhgeddaboudit. You want 95 minutes of easy fun? It's right here... and don't miss those obligatory outtakes. --Jeff Shannon

This review is from: Analyze That [DVD] [2002] (DVD)
Robert De Nero takes up his role as Paul Vitti again, but this time he's in jail for crimes he committed with the Mafia. He's worried that inside he will be killed - so he starts acting up. Dr Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal) is called in to help him, and the best they can do is have him put into his custody - but will Vitti really survive in the real world? Can he keep straight just long enough to keep the parole board happy?

This film is quite funny, but at times it's not as good as the first movie, especially the making of a TV show he does with Santiago. Lisa Kudrow is excellent as Ben's wife and really shines - which she has done since the end of Friends. Really the hit of Crystal and De Nero really make this work, their good cop bad cop routine is quite funny, and they interact like friends - rather than the doctor/patient routine. De Nero is funnier than I expected, as he's always been cast as the serious gangster or psycho - and now he's got these funny roles which I don't really think will jeopardise his career as he's got such a CV now.

Well worth renting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tongue in Cheek Mob, 4 Sep 2003

Both these films are a joy. The performances from both Billy and Bobby are hilariously funny, poking fun at the mafia and at some of Bob's previuos performances as a ganster. The story line is inventive and places plenty of oppurtunity for gags(no pun intended!). The sequel does not match the first but De Niro's "West Side Story" scene will have you splitting your sides in Analyse That! Together they are one of my favorite comedies and gangster movies. Rarely can you put a film in both categories!!!
