5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, useful, INCREDIBLE guide to chin na., 4 Jun 2004
By T. Macphail "ziplock_9610" (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
When i started reading this book i had no training partner, no real history with joint locks (other then a small amount of nunchaku locks, and that was, and still is, very limited) and i wasnt sure what to expect from the book.

After only a few months i now have a solid training partner (along with many other people interested in the art) who owns his own copy of the book, i have a much large arsenal of joint locks, including the full wrist section and a large portion of the elbow locks.

Although my speed at the moment is pretty awful, the book includes a whole section on speed and strength training for getting better at implementing all the techniques.

Yang Jwing-Ming is possibly the best martial arts author i have read any books by so far, with books that provide a lot of information in a layout that anyone can understand.

This particular book starts with an explanation of what chin na is, how it works, and what types of chin na there are. Following that it moves onto the section on speed and strength training for chin na, then techniques laid out on different areas. Then after all the techniques (which include a brief but great section on cavity strikes) it has a very large section on healing any injuries that can be caused by chin na (well... other then death in the case of certain cavity strikes).

The images are easy to understand, with each part of the text being linked to the image it is meant to be very clearly. The explanations are easy to understand for anyone, and it has a FULL explanation of everything.

The book has no problems that i can spot, and it EASILY deserves the 5 stars i give it. Although i must admit, the translation of some of the chinese names is amusing, i dont think i would ever say such a thing to a master.

Get this book if you are interested in chin na at all! its worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Good reinforcement, 25 Jun 1999
By A Customer
Good book if you have had some instruction in Chin Na or at least a Chinese martial art. Some of the exercises I found to be a bit impractical for western society, such as branch twisting and such. However, this book does give a good overview of Chin Na along with some strenghtening techniques, which I found very helpful. Great book for practitioners!
