Amazon.co.uk Review

This giant-man-eating-snake-in-the-jungle thriller definitely scores points as a guilty pleasure, especially with Jon Voight hamming it up as the monster-poacher. He makes life miserable for a team of documentary filmmakers on the Amazon river. Anaconda is one of those movies that exists for no other reason than to give computer animators a chance to strut their stuff with a new digital beastie, and they don't disappoint. It's a lot of fun to watch the mega-snake scarf down its victims and--in the case of Voight--regurgitate him right back up again, all covered in gooey digestive juices. You might wonder why Eric Stoltz, who plays Dr. Steven Cale, showed up for a role that requires him to be off-screen for most of the movie, but hey--when it comes to big snake movies, you might as well put your brain on hold and sitback for the slimy ride. --Jeff Shannon

5.0 out of 5 stars So bad it's good!, 2 Jan 2007

Okay, it's not going to be winning any awards for script writing, plotlines or even CGI effects but as guilty pleasures go, this is right up there! The snake itself its a little over the top to say the least, including the scene when it starts flying vertically upwards out of the water. If you expect nothing from this film and just sit back and prepare to laugh at it's unuintended comic genius, you'll be a happy customer.

3.0 out of 5 stars Snakes alive, it's a modern day Z movie., 5 Jun 2011

A documentary crew are travelling down the Amazon to hopefully film a mystical tribe. On the way they rescue a stranded man, unaware of the trouble that his being on board will bring. As they get deeper down river his ulterior motives surface, he's a snake trapper and has his heart set on capturing a giant Anaconda snake. A beast that can grow up to 40 feet long.

Ah, creaky creature features, how I love them. Days of old when budgets were minimal and the makers of such pictures just wanted to entertain and hopefully give the discerning viewers a jolt or two, and yes, with the odd giggle thrown in on purpose. Enter the modern day creature feature, where budgets have considerably improved along with the advent of special effects. Where does this leave Anaconda you ask? Is it a modern day homage to the "good old days," or is it a genuine attempt at making a horror film for the modern audience? How you answer that will probably determine how, or if, you enjoy the film.

The cast list suggests that the makers thought they were making a great movie, while some of the attempts at a serious performance also lend weight to that theory. John Voight on the other hand clearly knew what was needed and gives a sneering, leering ham sandwich performance befitting those creakers from days of yore. If only the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson and Kari Wuhrer had followed suit, we may have been sitting here with a creature feature to rank alongside the marvellous Tremors, or at the least an equal to the funny Arachnophobia.

It's not a desperately bad film by any stretch of the imagination. It's fun playing the "guess which name actor is going to be snake food next" and "who will survive come the end" While iffy effects aren't really an issue, hey this is a film with gigantic animatronic snakes in it! And for sure some scenes are pure horror hokum delight, watch out for a John Voight wink scene, it's Z movie legend now. But it's neither homage or good horror fodder. Enjoyable enough as an appetiser to far better genre pieces, but ultimately it's very forgettable. 5/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Really cool creature feature flick with great actors!, 13 April 2009

Loved this one for a long time and finally got round to buying it. Still just as brilliant. A group of people set out into the jungle in search of an ancient tribe when they come across Paul Sarone who is obsessed with catching the largest snake in the jungle. The anaconda which turns out to be lethal.
The acting in Anaconda is brilliant and the well-known cast shines. J-LO is pretty good as a strong female lead. Eric Stoltz is... well he is unconscious for most of the film but he's good whenever he appears. Jon Voight is particularly good as the villain, Sarone and Ice Cube proves to be very competent. I also enjoyed appearances from Jonathan Hyde and the legendary Owen Wilson in this groovy flick. Sure, the CGI is slightly dated by todays standards but it still stands up as being quite cool and the whole jungle river setting (The team are on a boat) really gives the film a very unique feeling that you only experience when people are in a jungle, sailing down a swampy river on a boat. It reminded me of when they do it in Jurassic Park 2 or 3 or something like that but anywho, the film is very engaging and the quality is very good on this DVD.
I would highly recommend getting this as soon as possible. The cast alone warrents at least a rental!
