Product Description

Product Description

Adeline Harris grew up in surroundings steeped in religion, from the beloved ayah in India who told her stories of Jesus wrestling tigers, to the strict father in England who placed a stone under her knee when she said the Rosary. It was no wonder that she always wanted to be a nun and a saint.

Brought up to respect the church’s authority, the parish priest was an important early influence in her life. And when she met the new charismatic priest, Father Kelly, her interest and amazement instantly deepened. She enjoyed spending time with him and rapidly began to spend every spare moment at the church, learning much from the principled man.

Following her father’s death, Adeline’s mother struggled to cope and Adeline was sent to live with Father Kelly. As Adeline grew up, she found herself falling in love with her guardian and hoped he might return her feelings. Then, when she was 18, she met a young man, Andrew, at a local dance. Soon she was pregnant and turned to the one person she could always rely on for help.  He offered to look after Adeline and her baby, but he couldn’t understand her affections for Andrew. And, as time passed, deep down she always knew it was a friendship that was destined to end in heartache.

A touching story 20 Nov 2010
By Marina
Format:Paperback
I browsed the biography section of a bookstore while waiting for the train and came across this. I was interested in reading it because it mentioned that the girl grew up in India and that it was about a religious upbringing. Once started I couldn't put it down. I read solidly for a about 3 hours on the train and then finished it at home that same evening. It read so well and the curiosity to find out where this was going, especially what role Father Kelly would continue to play in Adeline's life, kept me reading on. It's so interesting what Adeline experienced and you really get to 'be with her' throughout the book. I admire Adeline for telling her story so frankly, and for being so strong in the end.

It is uplifting to hear that there are still good people out there in the form of Father Kelly as described, who do care and will look after their friends as though they are family. The ending saddened me a little, but on the other hand I think he only reacted like a very emotionally involved individual might do, not being able to face or cope with his own feelings; it was just too much for him to bear I think. As Adeline writes, her life would not have been the same without him and he taught her so much on the way. He was a good man which is very comforting to know.

An Unconentional love 27 Oct 2010

This was a 'cannot put down read'. I think if you had a religious (catholic) upbringing in say the 60's this is a must have. I read it in 4 days, and i work full time. Great book.

This was, in my opinion, the best book out of the 5 BBC My Story books (More Than Just A Coincidence by Julie Wassmer, Not My Idea of Heaven by Lyndsey Rosa, In My Dreams I Dance by Anne Wafula and A Fighting Spirit by Paul Burns).
I thought that the story was very moving and told exactly how Adeline met a Priest, while living at home in very religious surroundings, and began to have lessons with the Priest (Father Kelly) on moral correctness and the right way to behave in society. The reason for Adeline's parent's suggesting that she have lessons with Father Kelly was because she was thought to be a rebellious child. As Adeline and Father Kelly had lessons together, they began to enjoy each others' company and became good friends. She always knew that he was someone she could rely on and very often talked about how she felt towards him. When Adeline's dad died, she actually went to live in a house with Father Kelly. Father Kelly then became very protective of her and she began to fear what he would say, especially when she got a boyfriend, whom Father Kelly thought wasn't suitable for her. The end of the book is very sad, but an excellent read nonetheless!!
