This is an excellent pendant to Taylor's autobiography, reprints of diary articles that he wrote for LRB..

Taylor is my candidate for the least pretentious and profound Brit historical thinker of the 20th century. There are equally profound minds, but some of them--Trevor-Roper, e.g.,--are fussy and precious, others--Isaiah Berlin--are talkers who talk too much.

I do think someone should write a book--starting with this volume--about British attitudes to ageing. Harold Nicolson spoke of "filthy fifty" when he reached that age. Taylor is a little more sanguine, although what did he expect to happen after he passed 75? That he'd have the energy of a 50 year old?
