Product Description

“Sharp, brutal, cool–yet also stunningly imaginative and perfectly realized.” –Michael Marshall, bestselling author of The Straw Men trilogy

AN OCCUPATION OF ANGELS
After Archangels materialize over the bloodbaths of WWII, they take up residence in most of the world’s major cities. But what would happen if, more than quarter of a century later, something somehow managed to kill these supreme beings? Killarney knows and, as an agent working for the Bureau, a British agency that’s so secret it doesn’t officially exist, she finds herself embroiled in the consequences as, one by one, the Archangels die.

Lavie Tidhar is the author of the linked-story collection HebrewPunk and the editor of the critically-acclaimed international fiction anthology The Apex Book of World SF. His novel MARTIAN SANDS will come out through Apex Publications in early 2013 and the second volume of The Apex Book of World SF is due in the winter of 2011.

DRM-free and priced at 99 cents for a limited time, AN OCCUPATION OF ANGELS is a novella of approximately 30,000 words.

"An Occupation of Angels is a breathless adventure story, finely crafted and rammed home with the assured confidence of an author very much in his stride."

"We travel with the protagonist from historic Paris to the remote, frozen wastelands of Siberia and beyond, perhaps even to Heaven itself. The action scenes are well-written and compelling. This is an adventure story, plain and simple." --Skull Salad Reviews, TJ McIntyre

"An Occupation of Angels is exhausting, but in a good way. Tidhar delivers a supernatural spy novella that gallops along at a break-neck pace. True to his usual form, Tidhar drops you into the middle of the action, only feeding you pieces of information as they naturally come up in the story. The result is that you're endlessly intrigued, both by what's happening, and where and when it's happening. Tidhar never falls into the trap of standing back and admiring the alternative history he's created. Rather, he uses it, with all its richness and mystery, as an effective backdrop to a cinematic thriller, and the reader is left hungry for more." --The Bookslave, J. Blackmore

From the Publisher

An Occupation of Angels is a taut, high-octane thriller in the tradition of Adam Hall's Quiller novels and Tim Powers' Declare. This is the first novella from the winner of the Clarke-Bradbury Prize, and is an hallucinatory trip that is guaranteed to get you high... as high as angels.

Before The Bookman 29 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
An Occupation of Angels is a master-class in pulp fiction; the pace is break-neck, with the book reading like a cross between Ian Fleming's James Bond and Gregory Widen's The Prophecy. It's maybe like the impression we'd have of Brian Lumley's `Necroscope' if he'd stripped back the characterisation and had stopped writing after the first, superior installment of his series.

I was a bit wrong-footed by this story. Having read the Bookman by the same author I was expecting more of the same and it took me a while to understand what was going on.

I was a little disappointed that there was no explicit explanation of exactly where these angels came from, and why, but for most of it the pace was so fast there was no time to think about that sort of thing.

The hero is actually a heroine, which makes a change for adventure-based stories, and at such a reasonable price I can live with the lack of background detail, which is possibly being left vague to leave the door open for sequels.

I really enjoyed this book. The mix of a traditional spy story and the fact that this was an alternative history where angels had come to occupy the earth made for a very interesting read. I thought the pace was good and the action was believeable. The thing I enjoyed most was the imagery of the angels themselves, almost holed up in these vast buildings like St Paul's cathedral. I would reccomend it to anyone who likes a story with a lot of action and a plot that is different enough to hold their attention.
