Where does one begin with a back catalogue as varied and imposing as Laibach's, which encompasses industrial rock and dance, classical theatre soundtracks and sheer industrial noise? Perhaps with their ironic "original cover versions" as this collection suggests. Laibach's approach to the cover version has always been to remake the original in their own militaristic image, creating a "new-original" that exposes rock music's hidden totalitarianist tendencies. If this all sounds too theoretical or political to take, let's not forget the often kitsch black humour that infuses these recordings, with an unflinching poker-faced deadpan delivery, unafraid to take on such rock royalty as The Beatles (Get Back) and Rolling Stones (Sympathy For The Devil), Queen (One Vision), Europe (The Final Countdown) et al. After all, Laibach were unafraid to take on, parody, and successfully outlast the post-Tito dictatorship of the former Yugoslavia, a claim very few of their contemporaries could ever hope to make!

Simply to categorise Laibach as Industrial, or Goth, or whatever, does their recorded body of work little justice, and as an introduction to Laibach, this CD does seem to concentrate too much on one aspect of their work. I would recommend "Anthems" with it's bonus CD of remixes as a more balanced representation of their work as a whole. For the already dedicated fan, there are new tracks "Warm Leatherette" (a nod to Mute label boss Daniel Miller's debut as The Normal) and Bob Dylan's "Ballad Of A Thin Man" which sounds truly terrifying with it's machine-gun rhythms, as well as the Kraftwerk pastiche "Bruderschaft" formerly released on Laibach-curated Kraftwerk tribute "Trans Slovenia Express 2" and Drafi Deutscher's schlager classic "Mama Leone".

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for Beginner or Collectors of Laibach. 25 Jan 2013

It stands on its own as a great album (with two new tracks!) as well as a good anthology.

No further detail needed, a must-have for the curious to NSK enthusiast!
5.0 out of 5 stars Better every year 16 Nov 2012

It's fair to say that Laibach may have a bad habit of rereleasing the same 5 or 6 songs over and over with different packaging and etc... But the 2 new tracks added to this collection prove that the group gets better, darker, clever, and funnier with every thing they do. Nothing makes me happier.
4.0 out of 5 stars Should have been more varied 21 Oct 2012

Laibach released a cd titled, "Anthems" that already has almost the exact same selection of songs as this cd. That being said, the additional songs are well worth having. Their version of Warm Leatherette is a phenomenal update on label honcho Daniel Miller's original that has probably made him both proud and jealous. Ballad Of A Thin Man is also fantastic and the music really brings out the darkness of the lyrics (plus any version of a Bob Dylan song that doesn't actually feature Bob Dylan's vocals is always a hit in my book). Later we come across a Laibach original (Bruderschaft) that they rerecorded in the style of Kraftwerk- not technically a cover but an interesting take: let's do our own song for a Kraftwerk tribute album as though Kraftwerk had recorded it. Quite a backwards compliment... The album features takes on two national anthems: Anglia (a scathing rendition of God Save The Queen) is beautiful and brilliant while Germania is the less impressive of the two tracks and personally I would have preferred they put Rossiya on instead (however, given the pervasity of the German language on this cd, I can see why they chose it). There are also covers of two Beatles songs: Get Back and Across The Universe. Across The Universe is quiet and beautiful while Get Back is bombastic and off-putting (probably on purpose but that still doesn't make me want to listen to it repeatedly). There are two versions of Life Is Life- exactly as there are on Anthems- and in both instances one would have been good enough. As an "introduction" to the band, this album is a good, if one-sided, experience. As an album for the serious fan, it would probably be better to just download the three new pieces (Warme Lederhaut, Ballad Of A Thin Man and Bruderschaft) and buy Anthems, which features a second disc of remixes to boot.
