If you're looking for one album which contains hits and highlights from Marianne's two most important eras of song, you've found it here with this excellent single CD. I'm an avid fan, and still wish for some kind of box set of her recordings to be released one that. Such a dream might be excessive to newcomers, unlike this 16 track set, but for the big fans, a triple set of discs is long overdue.

Marianne started her career as a folk, pop singer in the 1960s, and this period is covered on here via her haunting rendition of the folk standard 'Scarborough Fair', The Animals' 'House of the Rising Sun' and her hits 'This Little Bird', 'Is This What I Get For Loving You?', 'Come and Stay With Me', and her fine rendition of 'Monday, Monday'. Her debut hit of 1964 'As Tears Go Back' opens the album, but it's the vastly superior, virtually perfect 1987 re-recording.

The other songs all came later, and this reviewer regards this period of Marianne's career, from 1979 to the mid 1990s as her best. As a result of all the drug taking, her voice changed so much, reminiscent of Debbie Harry, and the material, much more mature and personal now, was meatier and suited this superb new voice so well. 'The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan' is my favourite out of everything she has ever done, and as good as Dr Hook's version was, no one has come close to sing this song with the emotion and feeling it needs as Marianne. It was the standout track from her comeback album 'Broken English', and another gem from that record, 'Guilt', is also here. If you like these two songs, I strongly suggest you buy this album next. It's also nice to have 'Bored By Dreams', a track from her 1995 album 'A Secret Life', included, an almost dream like, catchy little pop song with lovely lyrics, my only criticism is that it could have been longer.

This is a budget compilation that actually lives up to it's name, it's 'An Introduction to Marianne Faithfull', and a damn good one.

I was in my teens, in the 60s, & doing a course in commercial art; totally unaware of what my future would bring. Marianne Faithful was a part of those times. Not that I knew her personally, just (some of) her music, amongst the many burgeoning artistes of those heady days. However...on the cusp of the 70s into the 80s, I found myself in the Rhodesian bush, as part of the Commonwealth Cease Fire Commission, & wondering why the hell I hadn't stuck to art school, & a future(?) in advertising? We all listened to Radio 5, broadcasting out of Mozambique, as the locally supplied radio wasn't up to much, musically speaking. The record that recieved the most air time, I hadn't heard before. It was 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan,' by Marianne Faithful. Last year I heard it again, having seemed to have missed its being in 'Thelma & Louise.' It brought it all back to me in an instant. Not just those times when we didn't know what was around the corner awaiting us, in the bush, but all of those days in the 60s & the 70s, when I still had hair on the top of my head, & I could still see past my belly, to my feet.

It offends me that I have to give even one star. This apalling cd is MF as she is today. She can hardly talk, never mind sing. Some things, like old girlfriends, are best remembered as they were. This is certainly the case in Marianne Faithfull's music. I have already thrown this cd away in disgust.

Where do I start? 23 Sept. 2002

As the title suggests, this CD provides the perfect introduction to Marianne Faithfull. By no means a definitive anthology, this album nonethless provides the listener with a collection of both her 1960's and more recent material. Also recommended for the established fan as this is the first time both era's have been incorporated onto one cd. Buy it you won't regret it!

Everything new ain't old 27 Feb. 2008

This is what I wanted a one CD cross the years best of. Unfortunately the one song I think people want to hear the original version of (as tears go by) is in a very inferior form here, almost unlistenable it's so bad.

Had to swap it! Buy one series or the other! 26 Jan. 2005

I bought this one not realizing she had re-recorded some of her earlier works with her raspy, current voice! Big letdown personally as I was interested in her earlier recordings and far less interested in her later stuff so much! Do yourself a favor and listen to the sound bytes if they are available and purchase one series or the other as a fan/potential fan of Faithful. She's two completely different singers here.
