"An Introduction to Language" is a recommended text at the University of Aberdeen for English undergraduate students. I found this book to be an excellent introduction to the main aspects of English linguistics. The book covers the major building blocks of language, phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Clear, concise, with lots of helpful examples.

I had little knowledge of the "building blocks" of language before I studied "The Essentials of Language" at university (shocking considering I studied English to the highest level at high school). I found this book very useful, and interesting to read.

Recommended for undergraduate students, or anyone with an interest in language.

This study is very logical and easy for educated people to understand. . We can see quite clearly that, in highly international circles, language tends to naturally become more phonetic as it did for many years in the US when that country had such high immigration - it's was a bit like a precursor to the modern world of global communication where all kinds of people from different linguistic backgrounds come together to speak the same language. While the book is for English speakers - it is relavent to the basic foundations of language in general. For anyone with a mild interest in linguistics and phonetics it's really not any effort to read at all as it's so interesting for the curious.
