Product Description

Review

'In this authoritative text Nick Wilton provides a comprehensive overview of the key contemporary themes and debates in the field of human resource management with a strong critical slant. I have no doubt that it will be a valuable resource for students of human resource management at both undergraduate and graduate levels' -
Dr David Collings, (Joint) Editor in Chief of Human Resource Management Journal and Senior Lecturer in International Management, J.E. Cairnes School of Business & Economics,
National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland

'This is an excellent introductory text that goes well beyond most conventional HR texts. Nick Wilton not only successfully outlines the rationale and operation of HRM but adopts a critical perspective on the study and practice of HRM by integrating state of the art academic research with contemporary ''real world'' challenges, debates and practical cases. This text is instructive, engaging and will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and potential for HR to contribute to both organizational performance and individual well-being' -
Dr Timothy Bartram, (Joint) Editor in Chief of the Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources and Associate Professor, School of Business,
La Trobe University, Australia

'This is an excellent textbook that combines research and practice in a very readable and interesting way! It does a great job of covering all the major topics in HRM and each chapter is filled with outstanding learning features' -
Randall S. Schuler, Distinguished Professor, HRM,
Rutgers University

This exciting new introductory text in human resource management moves beyond a prescriptive approach to provide a holistic overview of the role of HRM in its contemporary context. Acknowledging and reflecting upon key trends in HRM, the labour market and the broader economy, the author offers critical discussion of the theoretical and practical issues surrounding HRM.

Includes accessible learning features to help you best explore the material, including:

- 'research', 'ethics' and 'international' insight boxes;

- chapter summaries and objectives;

- self-test questions;

- recommended reading;

- end of chapter case studies.

An accompanying companion website (www.sagepub.co.uk/wilton) provides you with full-text journal articles, extended case studies, weblinks and a glossary. The website also provides an instructor's manual, PowerPoint slides and a multiple-choice test bank for lecturers.

This book is essential reading for undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA students, as well as those studying for their CIPD qualifications.

Nick Wilton is Senior Lecturer in HRM at Bristol Business School at the University of the West of England.

"Well-researched, well-written, and is clearly signposted and structured for the reader. The learning objectives at the outset of every chapter act as a clear guide for each topic explored. Additional references and further reading are also offered to the student seeking deeper knowledge. Case studies, throughout the book, bring the HRM theories to life and demonstrably link these with practice. Wilton’s book is an extremely useful core text for students of HRM and a welcome addition to HRM resources" - Denise Bagley, Principal Lecturer in Human Resource Management, London South Bank University

I will have to give credit to this textbook for the plethora of interesting case studies and the excellent content, however I think the way it is structured is very poor. It does have a guided tour at the beginning explaining the way things are organised, but who reads those anyway? It is not intuitive and on some occasionally it repeats the same subheadings within the same chapter. For example, in chapter 7 - Performance Management, on page 202 there is a subheading "Reward and performance management" and 7 pages later on 209 there is another subheading "Performance management and reward". While the author may have had a reason for doing this, I consider it confusing and so do some of my friends who read the book. There is the odd spelling mistake here and there too (nothing too noticeable), however, overall I would recommend this book to those who have to prepare for an exam. The author provides plenty of theoretical perspectives and structure aside, it's quite well written and I found it easy to follow the presented arguments.

I found this book to be very comprehensive covering the broad spectrum of Human Resource management theory and practice. It acts as a go-to text for many queries on current HR practice and policy. There are many relevant case studies across the private and public sector, which bring the theory to life. I used the Performance Management chapter for a workshop I was running and came across a number of examples I used in the session. I'd recommend to anyone who wants a text that covers all areas of HRM. I didn't access the CD but lots of further materials are covered here. It is also written very clearly and concisely. It is written for an academic and student audience but I read it and applied as part of a business environment - I think it works well for both.
