5.0 out of 5 stars Essential 5 Mar 2008
By R. Van
Format:Paperback
I bought this to supplement my final year Geography degree. It was a core text in the GIS course and for good reason. It described processes and also, examples and case studies of how they're applied!

In short - a superb, well written entry level text.

Format:Paperback
A well written text that is highly accessible to both the reader who has no previous knowledge in GIS, and the reader who wishes to consolidate and extend their knowledge. Littered with extensive examples on the key concepts and applications of GIS, each chapter is clearly written and provides an intelligent synopsis on the area in question. Illustrations, graphics and the glossary supplement the text, aiding in understanding for the unknowledgable reader; whilst references and suggestions for further study at the end of each chapter provide the more informed reader with opportunities to increase the depth of their knowledge in specific areas. An essential book for anyone who wishes to learn, or further their knowledge on GIS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for GIS books? Start with this one! 19 Jan 2011

Format:Paperback
If you're a GIS student/user looking for an easy reference book about GIS theory, you'll need only this one and nothing else. I reccomend it to my students in GIS courses, because it's easy and enjoyable to read from cover to cover as well. It is astonishing how more advanced GIS tasks are presented briefly but exhaustively.
The book is perfect also for self-taught GIS users, that after using GIS for a while need to strenghten their theory background and order the lessons learnt through practice.
Good graphs and tables, straight and clear organization of arguments and examples, useful questions and reflection inputs at the end of each chapter, good suggestions and web links for further study.
Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introductory Level GIS book 17 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This book introduces the basic principles of GIS from the perspective of a new user. Topics are covered with enough depth so that the book will also be beneficial to longer-term users. The writing style, graphics and case studies are presented in a simple and easy to read format. The book could be used as a text for a course or read by anyone interested in learning the fundamentals behind GIS technology. There is also a web site for the book that will allow readers access to current trends in GIS and URLs for case studies.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book 4 Aug 2009
Format:Paperback
This is an excellent book. It explains GIS step by step clearly. And I love the further studies section. It has section of review questions which help me to review what i learned, and it also provides very useful web links where i can get more information (case study material, GIS software and so on)! I think this book is good for both beginners and those who have already some knowledge about GIS.

4.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive introduction to GIS indeed... 13 Jun 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Even for me - a drone developer - this book has a lot to offer. I initially chose it to provide me with a background knowledge for one of the purposes of our product. Having "flicked" through it I became fascinated and it became a bedside companion for a week or two. A fascinating subject for a layman; for the student, or tyro, it might be essential...

3.0 out of 5 stars Very General 14 Feb 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
My expectations on buying this book was to receive a good overview of GIS and and what to expect as a creator / user. To be fair each area is identified but the descriptions lacked depth and are a little verbose with a lot of space is taken with examples. If you are after a book that starts to engage you with the detail of designing or seriously using GIS this may not be the one for you. If you want an overview with examples of applications, and to be made aware of the key words & jargon, I think this will meet your requirements.
