Product Description

Review

"McGrath cannot be accused of ignoring the realities of the church context in which he writes. I believe that McGrath deserves the profound respect and admiration of his fellow Christian writers." Linda Woodhead

From the Back Cover

In this new textbook, one of the world′s leading theological educationalists provides a comprehensive introduction to Christianity. Written in a clear and accessible style, An Introduction to Christianity will be essential reading for all who want to understand the dynamics of the world′s most numerous religion.

The book begins with an introduction to the biblical sources and discussion of the central figure of Jesus. The remaining three parts provide concise but comprehensive discussions of Christian theology, the history of Christianity from its origins to the present day, and Christianity in the modern world. Throughout, Alister McGrath treats Christianity as a way of life and not just a set of ideas. He avoids any form of denominational bias, and aims to give an accurate picture of the various Christian traditions in the modern world.

Helpful class text 28 Jan 2001

Format: Paperback
I found this text to be a very helpful source. It gave a well-written overview of the history and beliefs of the christian faith. I really liked the unbiased way he presented the information. Although it was about Christianity, it was not at all persuasive in nature. I also appreciated the study questions at the end of the chapters when studying for tests (in my Christian theology class). It is a very readable book--you don't have to be a theologian to understand the concepts of christianity.

I found this a comprehensive review of Christianity. This work explores the origins of Christianity and its core beliefs, then traces Christianity's subsequent history through to current times. Interesting cultural and political influences of the praxis of Christianity are highlighted which provide for a rich understanding of how current belief arrived at contemporary form. It is a worthwhile read from a well known academician. I highly recommend this purchase.
