This book is aptly titled. Ms. Fields has produced a compendium of information regarding her subject which is worthy of a research classic. I have never read, even in my college courses, a more thoroughly researched book on any subject. The footnotes alone run many, many pages. The historical, social, sexual, racial, political and economic aspects of lingerie's production, distribution, appreciation and acquisition are explored to the furthest degree. Those looking for titillation, however, would best be served by looking elsewhere. This work is scholarly and informative, but salaciousness or even mild stimulation is not its forte.
