An Instrument of Deception:

A Corporate Manipulation

John Simmons is arrested for something he hasn't done.
From there on, he is sucked into a world of conspiracy,
deception, torture and drug-induced mind control.
One moment he's a down on his luck loser,
the next he's dealing with a deadly organisation
called the corporation and its British enforcer, MI5.

The corporation maintains its power and global control
by using politicians and the media.
But now the power base of the corporation is under
threat from the internet with its free, uncontaminated
information. Torn between commercial interests that
the internet generates and blocking out web content,
the corporation has a sinister plan that it
wants to use as an alternative, a plan that
involves mass manipulation on a scale never
before seen and John is part of that experiment.

John's journey takes on a multitude of self-discoveries
and he is brought to the brink of madness as a result.
His perceptions of reality are blown sky high as he
learns about the truth behind the facade that is modern-day life.

From living a grotty tower block existence in a
downtown London suburb, John becomes a fully
trained operative for a new global counter movement
called the renegades, which is out to stop the
corporation's plans for mass manipulation.
The movement that he now finds himself in is
the British section, which has a high proportion
of ex-MI5 agents who have become disillusioned
with the direction in which MI5 is heading.
Together with his new allies, John is ready
for the most dangerous situation that he has
ever had to face.

A fast-paced political conspiracy thriller, An Instrument of Deception: A Corporate Manipulation will leave you craving for more as you, the reader,
follow John's passage into a realm that exposes
modern-day existence as an illusion that keeps the powerful
in positions of control and privilege at the expense of the many.

More About the Author

Jim Dooley was born and brought up in the East End of London. He spent most of his adult life having to battle with job insecurity, dead-end jobs and facing the consequences of those situations. He also spent a large amount of time having to care for two of his now deceased parents.
In 2008 Jim graduated from the University of East London with a degree in English literature. Unfortunately, the graduation happened just as the recession began to rear its ugly head, resulting in difficulty getting graduate positions in employment.
His interests include regularly keeping fit, running a minimum of forty miles a week and weight training three times a week. Reading a variety of books (fiction and non-fiction). He is also a big fan of music, engaging with most genres. He lives and breathes in England.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting but badly written 24 Nov. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very interesting plot which could be real in a not too distant future, and I did struggle through 80% of the story but had to give up because it was so badly written with so many plot holes.

Obviously this book has not been edited, as simple mistakes such as getting into a Range Rover and getting out of a BMW should have been picked up on the first edit. Also, there are some very glaring technical mistakes (perhaps only obvious to a technical person) which make it very irritating and unbelievable. One major thing I could not come to terms with was the hero of the story who was an ordinary guy ending up leading trained MI5 agents ..... not going to happen ..... even in fiction.

Two stars are awarded for the idea only, but the whole book really needs a lot of editing and plot correction to make a credible and good read.

From the get first chapter I was hooked. The twist and turns within this superb debut novel are subtly and wonderfully written. Jim Dooley has an excellent approach to both character development and writes believable and well thought out dialogue. Without giving too much away (and spoiling the plot for those who are yet to read this) this book falls in the 'cat and mouse', spy thriller genre and holds itself up there with the best in business at the moment. Most of us can relate to the main protagonist 'Jonh' and are instantly on his side and feel like you are running around the country with him. A sure fire summer 'must read'.

The author needs a lesson in grammar! The plot was intriguing but completely ruined by the writing of it. Sorry, but won't be buying /reading any more of his books.
