The Earl of Treyford, 'Trey', was both spent and tired. While on a dig in Egypt his partner, Richard, was killed. Trey made a deathbed promise to return a scarab adornment to the young man's sister and, at the same time, promising to protect her. Preparing for an older spinster he was taken aback when he finally returned to England and met the beautiful Chione.
With an undertow of suspense this unusual Regency romance avoids the typical 'ton' of London. Instead, we have a mishmash of characters with some humorous moments that infiltrate the dusky tapestries and gloomy halls of an overworn estate. Bouncy back and forth, you feel the sexual tension that Trey and Chione feel.
It all adds to the chase of some very unsavory characters that want them dead. The pace of reading this romance is fast. There are enough nibbles of mystery to keep most everyone intrigued. If you are young and new to this genre or find older narratives from this era somewhat dry, this romance with some risque moments might interest you. I found it refreshing.
