Lawrence Joffe`s "An Illustrated History of the Jewish People certainly lives up to it`s title, as it is both lavishly and beautifully illustrated with a range of pictorial items, and comprehensive in its outline of the fascinating story of the Jewish people. The book comprises eleven chapters, preceded by a Timeline noting 4000 years of chronology from the time of Abraham and the Patriarchs to the modern State of Israel. Jewish traditions and festivals, from Rosh Hashanah to Purim, Pesach to Lag B`Omer, and from Tu B`Shevat to Shavuot, are detailed, as well as the rituals of The Shabbat and life events which are an integral part of Jewish Life from the cradle to the grave. The origins of Judaism and the exile, return and dispersal of the Jewish people are explained, as is the diaspora, anti-semitism, Inquisition, and the effects of Islamic and Christian attacks; the Sephardic and Ashkenazi traditions, historically important individuals, like Maimonides and Baruch Spinoza, and the rise of Zionism. There are sections on Hassidism, developments in religious belief, secularism, the spectre of the holocaust and its aftermath, Palestine, Israel, and Jewish culture in modern society. This is a highly readable, well-written, outstanding and much recommended account which is both enjoyable and informative. Duncan Hatcher

Stylish balance of the friendly and the earnest. Thoughtful and extremely well-written - accessible without being condescending or over-simplified. Now a standard in my repertoire of barmitzvah gifts.

Disappointed after purchasing several books supposedly about Jewish Traditions & Heritage I've still not found one that's easy to follow.
