Not having Sky, I didn't get to see this series, but from what clips I've seen online convinced me I had to make this purchase. On its arrival I watched just the first episode and realized I hadn't laughed 'so hard' in ages. When you're listening to Karl Pilkington speak you think he could never make you laugh so much, but then he says things that you just cannot stop yourself from laughing at even if you tried. I found myself laughing harder at Karl than at some of the top comedians out there.
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant send Karl all over the globe to experience anything from `deep sea trawler fishing' to `bungee jumping', to `sumo wrestling' to `wing walking'. He visits everywhere from China to Peru, to Alaska to Japan, covering parts of the world's cultures still practising ancient traditions and cuisines that we wouldn't normally get to see. But most of what has been agreed he'll be doing on his expedition is all a deception. He is plunged completely out of his comfort zones and is expected to do whatever Gervais and Merchant throw at him. For example, Karl is told he'll be swimming with dolphins in Australia, but ends up totally off track to be humiliated in Thailand, and when he finally arrives in Australia he finds himself submerged inside a cage with a great white shark eyeing him up.
Hilarious as these pranks are, this series is not just about Karl being sent around the world to be laughed at, it's also an insightful travel documentary series that's very funny at the same time. If you haven't seen it or ordered it yet I urge you to do so, and Blu-ray is the best way to experience it. The picture quality is amazing with glorious detailed scenery and every bead of sweat is picked out on Karl's perfectly round head. There is some grain in low light shots, but most of the time the picture is great, and the overall filming and production is first-class.
"Thank you Karl for your endurance and for making us laugh with your unique observations, Gervais and Merchant pull the strings, but you are the star by far, and far from an idiot abroad."
