Product Description

Review

"Novels of naval warfare have long captured readers' attention and imagination, perhaps because many of them, in addition to simply being great yarns, illuminate the moral dilemmas of command, offer glimpses of social and political history, and describe life at sea. An Honorable German does all those things... A gripping and eye-opening first novel."--Booklist

Book Description

A sweeping saga of World War II, An Honorable German is an uniquely epic, suspense-filled debut novel featuring a heroic German naval officer. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

I bought this book just by chance. Although I have read my bit about WWII, this is the first book I read that attempts to depict things from the German side. Of course the author is not German and certainly did not live WWII in own flesh, but this is a very good depiction of the feelings and situations German soldiers and sailors might have experienced themselves. I completely recommend this story of honour, difficult life in the midst of a political and social nightmare, and the struggle to keep a little piece of humanity in a desert of hate.

Very readable, well written, and unlike much historical fiction, very believable. I highly recommend it for any fan of WWII or naval history.

Life in a U-boat, the fear and horrors of living in war, let alone one ordered by a madman like Hitler, the inner dynamics of Germany at the time (they weren't all Nazis), and heartfelt relationships. I enjoyed the story and am glad to have gotten to see what it showed me.
