This is undoubtably a useful book for those coming to Homer in the original - but be careful! It contains numerous mistakes, not due to misprinting, but to its own antiquity. Scholarship has moved on a long way since 1877, and you would be unwise to rely too heavily on this edition.

Useful 18 Jan 2010

Although over a century old this is still an excellent Homeric dictionary - however as the original was Greek to Latin some of the more commoner words are left in the original Latin without an English equivalent so the reader will also require some knowledge of Latin
Some of the words also have classical illustations which adds further interest

Don't get CONNED! 25 Jan 2011
By Jackal
Format:Paperback
There is no denying that this dictionary is a helpful aid for translating Homer.

However, it must be pointed out that it is no better than the Greek Lexicon, though, it is undoubtedly a cheaper option. The only two advantages that it has over the Lexicon are its sole focus on Homeric words (but rendering it USELESS FOR TRANSLATING OTHER TYPES OF GREEK), and its use of pictures to illustrate certain words (even though the internet could supply more detailed pictures).

MY ADVICE would therefore be to get the Lexicon - you can use it for everything! - or to refer to the Perseus digital library website, where you will find a free online interactive greek dictionary. The Homeric Dictionary is a a waste of money, unless you are a beginner or average student that wishes to focus on translating Homer, undisturbed by the modern world and the internet!
