About the Author
Mairi Hedderwick was born in Gourock, Scotland. At seventeen she took a job as a mother's help on the Isle of Coll in the Hebrides, beginning a life-long love affair with islands and their small communities. Her children were brought up there and now some of her grandchildren. Mairi's island world is delightfully reflected in the imaginary island of Struay where her perennially popular Katie Morag stories are set. As well as creating children's books Mairi writes and illustrates travel books for adults, including Highland Journey and Sea Change (Birlinn 2009). She also illustrated the acclaimed Janet Reachfar books, which are published by Birlinn. She continues to live on Coll.

If you have enjoyed anything else by Mairi Hedderwick (Katy Morag etc.) you will love this. Amusing stories of real folk with captivating illustrations. We had a wonderful holiday on Mull a couple of years ago, and the book captures the atmosphere exactly. It made me want to visit some other Hebridean Islands. Enjoyable as an armchair read and as inspiration to go out and explore the real thing. I read this book a couple of years ago and I can still remember the pictures in my mind's eye - salty fishermen, smiling cats, big skys, bewhiskered postman, dilapidated VW camper van. Do buy it.

What a glowious book. Mairi Hedderwick travelled through all the Hebridean Islands in the 80's painting and drawing as she went, and this is the culmination of that. Definitely a book for adults to marvel at the pictures, and she captures the essence of the Hebrides so well, the magic is included in this book. Perfect for inducing a flush of wanderlust, or just to escape to another place and time for a little while. A book to treasure forever more. Thanks Mairi! :)
