Book Description

6 Sep 2013
In An Everyday Miracle, eminent obstetrician and gynaecologist Jim Dornan gives a unique insight into the world of pregnancy, birth and women s health. Drawing on his forty-year career, he talks openly and at times controversially about working in a busy maternity unit, and about the immense joy, and sometimes heartbreak and loss, that women experience during pregnancy and childbirth.

Taking up where Call the Midwife left off, An Everyday Miracle tells the extraordinary stories of mothers, babies and their care over the last half-century.

Everyone needs to read this book. It made me laugh and cry and love. A beautiful, fascinating and insightful read for anyone who has a baby, doesn't have a baby, wants to have a baby, wonders what it wold have been like to have a baby! For men and women, my husband LOVED it! It gives an easy to understand account of many medical situations and procedures alongside heartwarming stories of triumph over adversity, pathos, humour and strength. I really, really loved it. The author evidently understands and values women very well indeed. It's also so easy to dip in and out of, therefore an easy to follow account. Get it!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Professor Dornan's account of women giving birth. It was heart warming to recognise the respect he had for every mother under his care. My first experience of childbirth took place in the Ulster Hospital in the 60's where my consultant addressed all concerns regarding my pregnant state to the sister as though I didn't exist. When my son was born, he was whisked away and not returned to me until the following morning. The bonding process between my son and I consequently took weeks to form. I cannot imagine such a thing ever happening under Prof. Dornan's watch.

This book is suitable for every age group. It gives a wonderfully insightful glance into the complexities of childbirth and, more importantly, the knowledge that the experience still remains an everyday miracle to mothers and doctors alike. There are wonderful stories of childbirth from every background, age and culture and lots of humour behind the scenes. Professor Dornan also uses a language everyone can understand unveiling things which previously remained a bit of a mystery

5.0 out of 5 stars Brillant Book 15 Nov 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a brillant book by a brillant doctor it is a must read for any woman who has had a child.
The book made me laugh and made me cry and was a wonderful treasury of true life stories during Prof Dornan's career. He is a man of great talent who without his help I would not have had my dear son. I have passed the book onto my sister who was reading it while in the Ulster Clinic for surgery and all who she came in contact with either knew or had heard of this great man (They have all been directed to where to purchase this brillant book). My son has went on to study medicine himself and infact had a wonderful weeks work experience with Prof Dornan and his very talented wife, Adam wants the book passed onto him next, who knows he could follow in Prof Dornan's footsteps!

I have enjoyed reading this book as I have worked for many years in the NHS and so knew a number of the medical staff
mentioned. However I did feel that the presentation was a bit stilted and could have been presented better.
I will recommend the book to friends in my area.
