Grusin steps out from behind the various machinations of film and television production to take centre stage on ‘An Evening with Dave Grusin’, a groundbreaking live recording that captures him conducting and performing with a host of stars, and backed by the 75-piece Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra at the Adrienne Arsht Center in Miami, Florida, in December 2009. The album is a collection of 12 songs by Grusin, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin and Henry Mancini. Guest performers on the date include Jon Secada, Patti Austin, Monica Mancini, Gary Burton, Arturo Sandoval, Nestor Torres and Sammy Figueroa. 5.0 out of 5 stars Quality performance 14 Jun 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I have a lot of Dave Grusin records and CD's. This one is a live CD and quality is truly excellent, and am talking about some serious audio quality hardware. I actually am using it as a reference disc now, as it captures the atmosphere of a live performance and has great dynamics. Some of the tracks I had on other records or CD's, but the live performance adds a different dimension. Given the severe limitations of the CD design and resolution, this has to be close to the best you are going to experience, but do play it on a good audio system and not via those horrible itunes ipods/iphones, which would be a waste. Dave Grusin is a master of arrangement and composition, and his musicians are first class. favourite track is Peter Gunn, but watch that volume control ! Some humorous bits on the album too. First class ! More please !

5.0 out of 5 stars Dave Grusin does it again 21 Jun 2011
By Jerry S. Steele - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
It has been at least 10 years since Dave Grusin has done a recording. Except for the one that he did with Lee Ritenour. This is truly a great album. I sometimes think that Mr Grusin does his best work in live albums. Everyone that he has on here is just great. Again thanks Mr Grusin for a great album. Just one favor let me know when I can buy this on DVD and not Blu Ray.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Evening with Dave Grusin (Blu-ray) 13 May 2011
By Gary Chu / Hong Kong - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
YOU shouldn't miss this long awaited wonderful concert if you're a lover of film score or jazz because it's an extraordinary evening not only just formally performed by the original composer on the stage but also offer interaction with his guests plus narration; personal feelings; rehearsal sessions & interviews to allow home audiences enjoy very much! It's gorgeous and marks the history. The talent of his frequent (GRP) partner, producer Larry Rosen is also remarkable!

The only comment I had, the concert via BLU-RAY was too short (about 1 hour more). Maestro Grusin should demonstrate more his own pieces like timeless classic The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter via the young musicians Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra or at least a Medley of his many other great works like The Champ; Heaven Can Wait; Havana; 3 Days of the Condor; Bobby Deerfield; Goodbye Girl, St. Elsewhere; Night Lines, etc........ His winning score Milagro Beanfield War should be included in BLU-RAY as same as CD. We fully understand that it might be commercial decision or selling strategy to differentiate between CD; BLU-RAY and iTunes App. Maestro Grusin wants continue pay tribute to his favourite Gershwin & Bernstein with more entertained jazz elements via his guests in which he already did exhibit his fireworks through Gershwin Connection (CD - 1991) and Dave Grusin presents West Side Story (DVD - 1997) before.

Thanks Grusin & Rosen, I dreamed this kind of film music concert since 80s. Dave Grusin is my most favourite American film composer (France - Georges Delerue and Italy - Ennio Morricone) and he's an all-rounded musician - composer, arranger, orchestrator, conductor, pianist and also a brilliant producer - attention to details (ie: The Orchestral Album; Cinemagic; Two Worlds & Amparo, etc....). The drawback of this terrific evening is limited to audiences equipped Blu-ray or iTunes App only and of course CD. It's too bad no DVD!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great sound, great music, and great performers 27 Jun 2013
By John J. Puccio - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
"An Evening with Dave Grusin" is not so much a live concert or even a musical event as it is a celebration. It celebrates over half a century of music from composer, arranger, and pianist Dave Grusin, whose work includes everything from the scores to "The Graduate," "The Midnight Man," and "Three Days of the Condor" to classical and jazz compositions, earning him Academy Award nominations, Golden Globe nominations, Grammy nominations, and several Grammy award wins. On this 2009 live performance album remastered by FIM/LIM, Grusin acts as conductor of the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and as host, with a slew of guest stars joining in. He makes his own best fitting tribute to himself in the music he plays and leads.

Among the tunes that most appealed to me were the opening item, Grusin's own "Fratelli Chase," a lively pop-jazz piece with a good deal of sparkle. Then there's a lovely combo of Grusin's music to "On Golden Pond" and a spirited hornpipe medley. A few tracks later we find an effectively sultry "Porgy & Bess" medley.

For more jazz than not, pioneering vibraphonist Gary Burton joins in as soloist on Bernstein/Sondheim's "Cool" from "West Side Story." Following that is more from the musical as Jon Secada and Patti Austin do a duet of "Somewhere," Secada does "Maria," and flutist Nestor Torres solos in "I Feel Pretty."

Right in the middle of the concert, almost out of left field, comes a suite from Grusin's movie score for "The Milagro Beanfield War." It's the best, and longest, piece on the program, full of musical invention, lustrous melodies, and delightful playing. It's a light, lilting, lyrical work most of the way that, frankly, took me by surprise as I hadn't remembered how good the movie's music was, it had been so long since I'd seen the film.

The album ends with Henry Mancini's familiar theme to TV's "Peter Gunn," with Gary Burton soloing, and then Grusin's "Memphis Stomp," which brings things to a roaring close. With great sound, great music, and great performers, it doesn't matter that most of it comprises short bits and pieces or that the whole thing is so short; it's what we expect of a pop-concert album, and Grusin provides it in spades.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Grusin Gathering is not to be missed!! 2 April 2012
By The "G" Man Speaks!! - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
As a Grusin fan for more years than I can remember, "An Evening with....." is certainly not to be missed! Many of todays long time talents have expanded their portfolios by partnering with large orchestras to present their accomplishments in a new and different light. (Just listen to "Chris Botti in Boston with the Pops"!)Dave has hit the "ball" out of the park with this outstanding presentation of his works. As I stated above, this recording in not to be missed.
