Product Description

fRoots, August/September 2001

Christine Collister has a killer voice. As full as Dusty Springfield or as blue as Alison Moyet, this woman is living midnight. An Equal Love pulls no punches in establishing her credentials; it's the album on which she unfurls her own colours and pens elegant numbers. "Waiting For My Prayer" is a powerful sweep of anxious gothic intensity; "Venus Proud" is a bar-room blues with a great, dirty trombone solo from Annie Whitehead and a big, cheesy organ surround from Martin Lister; the title track is one of the most affecting vocals she's yet committed to record. So this is the album she's threatened to make so many times and never quite pulled off. Sure her efforts could chill you, they'd be stacked with grace and elegance, great cover versions, but it's taken the investment and experience of the new horizons set by Topic to tap into what Christine Collister is really about. No one has understood her this well since the giddy days of her partnership with Clive Gregson. Producer John Ravenhall must take a deal of credit; he's used minimal backing and left huge spaces for her to fill with passion and vocal velvet. The record has the same sort of cleansing feel that seeped from Linda Thompson's One Clear Moment, when a woman found she could do what she always dreamed of, and Collister certainly does that here. You can almost touch the self-belief on "Give It Up", a sobering confessional through the dark night of the soul to the light of a new morning. Even "Moon River" is thoughtful and heartfelt, a stunning interpretation of an old easy listening chestnut that stops you dead in your tracks. A deeply personal album, this could be her finest hour. She combines amazing vocal control with emotional authority, "now strong enough to dare to try...I can fly." And you'd better believe it!

One of Christine Collister's great talents is choosing songs to cover (either obscure or well known) that she takes to another level. Other albums have seen my all time favorite versions of Tracks of My Tears and Tom Wait's Broken Bicycles. The cover on this of Sarah McLachlan's Full of Grace brought an extra dimension to an already moving original. Don't think, though, that she can't write her own material, Extra Care (co-written with the fabulous Helen Watson) and Venus Proud show what an underestimated gift she has. And if you get a chance to see her live, her unaccompanied version of Motherless Child will make your spine tingle!

but this just seems a bit too Easy Listening for my liking. Given the Roots review and the people she's worked with in the past, I was expecting more than this.
She has an excellent voice, I grant you, but I reckon it would be better channelled into a real musical style, rather than the slightly odd mizture of styles on display here. And the unaccompanied version of Motherless Child seems to me more like an exhibition piece than a song she truly connects with - give me the Van Morrison version any day.
