A great book 6 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
I've already read the first two books in this series, but thought this was the best yet. Laura Wilson brilliantly evokes the atmosphere of wartime England; this might make you think the book would be gloomy, but she puts a lot of humour in there too. Plus the main characters are so well drawn you really care about what happens to them.

An Empty Death 15 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
This is the second of the Inspector Stratton trilogy and is set in 1944, four years after Laura Wilson's initial story "Stratton's War". Characters are re-introduced including Ted Stratton's family and - towards the end of the book - someone for whom he worked during the Blitz. This is an absorbing book and could be described as 'un-putdownable', as the reader wants to know every part of 'what happens next'. The last one hundred pages are so gripping, containing as they do 'hammer-blow' shocks, that I read them right through to the end in one session. Thoroughly recommnded.

Compulsive reading 27 Dec 2011
Format:Paperback
I found this book began slowly, and seemed a bit low on suspense, with the baddie shown up close. But it soon got me hooked. The two viewpoints - Stratton, the detective, and the chameleon con man - are equally compelling and very skilfully done. The hospital setting, as well at the big set piece of the bombing raid, is very vivid. Subtle characters, moral ambiguity, period detail - altogether a thoroughly satisfying read.
