Praise for An Elephant in the Garden

"This is a handsome, very pickupable book. Brightly and informatively jacketed, its text punctuated by lovely, fluid ink and wash illustrations by Michael Foreman, it deserves a prominent place on school library bookshelves and, if there is any justice in the world, in bookshops."
Guardian

"A thrilling and moving new novel about an extraordinary animal caught up in a very human war, for anyone who loved The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips or The Butterfly Lion!" Waterstones

"For readers aged eight and over, this captivating novel offers an insight into how Hitler came to power, refracted through the gaze of the young narrator."
Telegraph

"Following the stage success of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo returns with another gem in his animals in war series, An Elephant in the Garden."

A Kid's Review
Format:Hardcover
This book is an exciting story set in the Second World War in Germany, showing a different side of the war. This novel involves an old woman retelling her life story to a child named Karl. A gripping tale, with brilliant characters, who become refugees with an elephant. The ending is good and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. I would say that this book would inspire children aged 9 to 14, although my grandmother enjoyed reading it to me!

This was bought to entertain us (2 adults and an 8 year old) on a long car journey. It was enjoyed by us all. Like many Morpurgo books it confronts some difficult issues, but given that it was set in WWII it was not as hard hitting as I feared it might be. It offers a heart warming story set against the background of the end of WWII in Germany. Beautifully written and read.

My daughter loved this book and so did I. No question about the author and his writing, but the added bonus was that Amazon made it easy for us to access such books and get them in hand in time with few punches on key boards.
Thanks

excellent read about a family trying to escape the war. Definitely one of my favourite michael morpurgo books, but if I had to fault it, I would say that it ended a bit short.

It makes me happy to know that out of the ashes of this horror, a new Germany must grow, and that you, and our friends and family will be a part of it. Remember always the words of Goethe that I love: Whatever you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic. Begin it now. So, begin the new Germany, my darling, help it grow. I know you will. I am sad I will not be there to see it in person, but I shall always be with you in spirit. "e;
