Book Description

25 Oct 2011

A thrilling and moving new novel about an extraordinary animal caught up in a very human war, for anyone who loved The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips or The Butterfly Lion…

Dresden, 1945. Elizabeth and Karli's mother works at the zoo, where her favourite animal is a young elephant named Marlene. Then the zoo director tells her that the dangerous animals – including the elephants – must be shot before the town is bombed. Unable to give Marlene up, their mother moves her into the back garden to save her… and then the bombs start to fall.

Their home destroyed, the whole family must flee the bombed-out city and through the perilous, snow-covered landscape, all the while avoiding the Russian troops who are drawing ever closer. It would be hard enough to do, without an elephant in tow…

Review

Praise for An Elephant in the Garden

"This is a handsome, very pickupable book. Brightly and informatively jacketed, its text punctuated by lovely, fluid ink and wash illustrations by Michael Foreman, it deserves a prominent place on school library bookshelves and, if there is any justice in the world, in bookshops."
Guardian

"A thrilling and moving new novel about an extraordinary animal caught up in a very human war, for anyone who loved The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips or The Butterfly Lion!" Waterstones

"For readers aged eight and over, this captivating novel offers an insight into how Hitler came to power, refracted through the gaze of the young narrator."
Telegraph

"Following the stage success of War Horse, Michael Morpurgo returns with another gem in his animals in war series, An Elephant in the Garden."
Telegraph

5.0 out of 5 stars Elephant in the Garden 18 Aug 2010
A Kid's Review
Format:Hardcover
This book is an exciting story set in the Second World War in Germany, showing a different side of the war. This novel involves an old woman retelling her life story to a child named Karl. A gripping tale, with brilliant characters, who become refugees with an elephant. The ending is good and I am sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. I would say that this book would inspire children aged 9 to 14, although my grandmother enjoyed reading it to me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect listening for adults and children alike 15 Oct 2010
By Delta
Format:Audio CD
This was bought to entertain us (2 adults and an 8 year old) on a long car journey. It was enjoyed by us all. Like many Morpurgo books it confronts some difficult issues, but given that it was set in WWII it was not as hard hitting as I feared it might be. It offers a heart warming story set against the background of the end of WWII in Germany. Beautifully written and read.

5.0 out of 5 stars another good read from Michael Morpurgo 3 Sep 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I very much enjoyed this book and in fact I had to buy two copies, because I had already given the first copy to my grandson aged ten, when I realised that a friend of mine aged 16 would also enjoy it and needed a copy, as he had already shared War Horse with me some time ago. Like all Michael Morpurgo's books, it is accessible and well written. It's particularly interesting to get under the skin of a German family caught in Dresden in the final months of the Second World War as the British bombers firebomb this historic city.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Elephant in the Garden 24 Jan 2012
By Penny D
Format:Paperback
In my ignorance and being an 'older' person, I have decided to read as many Michael Morpurgo books as possible. I was completely blown away by this story and could not put it down until finished. How important to read books that tell a story from other peoples' points of view, the bombing of Dresden was so awful, and hopefully this book would give young people some idea of what went on in the 1940s. I am old enough to remember the war as a very young little girl, so I suppose I could almost 'be in' the story and to a certain extent understand what was happening.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Elephant in the Garden 25 July 2011
Format:Paperback
An interesting story, depicting the problems faced by a small family, trying to escape from Germany on foot with an Englishman. In my opinion it would certainly interest a child who read it. However, as an adult, it did remind me a little of Neville Shute`s book "The Pied Piper" but he didn`t have an elephant to look after.
