4.0 out of 5 stars Familiar voices, unfamiliar times 5 May 2011

This story has echoes that reverberate right back to 1964 with the Dalek Invasion of Earth. Susan, the Doctor's granddaughter, left him then, and stayed on an Earth ravaged by the Daleks to be with David Campbell.

In this story, the Doctor, still Grandfather to Susan, returns to England to see Susan, as he is concerned about what she may be involved in. Here, he meets also his great grandson, Alex, who is definitely getting mixed up in Earth politics - and more? Earth is slowly being rebuilt - technology is feared, those on the Moonbase are unable to communicate with Earth, and aliens are feared - anyone over 35 years of age still remembers the Dalek Invasion and what it was like. So Susan, while holding a respected position as regards the Earth Council, treads a fine line; particularly when it appears that aliens are approaching Earth again. But who are they, and what do they want?

This story is extremely intriguing in that we, as viewers and listeners of Doctor Who for many years, know so much more of the Doctor's adventures and where the time, for him, has gone, than Susan does. For Susan only twenty or so years have passed; for the Doctor so many people, places, times. So there is a touch of poignancy in the story that underlies the current action. It is a good `time and place' setter, if you will - it sets up stories for the Doctor to interact with his grand-daughter and great-grandson from now on, and it gives a nice sense of placement for the listener, hearing old familiar voices and giving a sense of familiarity to those of us who fondly remember the `classic' Doctor Who. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Family reunion 8 Jan 2011
By Paul Tapner TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
An audio play featuring Paul McGann as the eighth Doctor Who, this is a special release that doesn't fit into any of the regular runs of his.

A single story, complete on one cd, it runs for just over an hour. Basically one long episode with the only breaks being the usual cd chapter ones.

At the end of Doctor Who - The Dalek Invasion Of Earth [1964] [DVD] [1963] the first Doctor left his granddaughter Susan on Earth. An Earth that had just fought off the Daleks. And would now have to rebuild. Susan had fallen for a resistance fighter.

But he was a mortal man. And she's from Gallifrey....

This story starts many years later, with Susan now a widow and having been heavily involved in Earth politics. The human race, as a result of the Dalek Invasion, has become insular and very anti alien, and the world is still being reconstructed. Susan, as we find in some early scenes, is a lone voice of reason in an increasingly paranoid world.

Her son [Played by Paul McGann's son Jake] is involved in a xenophobic group called Earth United.

But those in charge of it might just have a hidden agenda.

Then aliens turn up, offering to help. Some think their offer might be too good to be true.

And then another alien turns up. The Doctor. Having regenerated seven times since he last saw Susan. Can he save the Earth again? And his Granddaughters relationship with her son?

The portrayal of a divided and struggling and prejudiced Earth is very credible, and Susan's political opponents are guaranteed to rub you up the wrong way. The aliens of the story are a very interesting creation and have an interesting way of going about things.
