I was once asked to write an essay on the current thinking and research concerning Aspirin. I wish I had this book then, it would have saved me hours of research.
This book is very much aimed at the lay-person who may have read the recent news headlines regarding the clinical trials which have shown a medium- to long-term reduction in GI cancers and cardiovascular disease especially those in medium to high risk categories. As a current medical student I found the book an interesting read considering the credentials of Dr Souter and his work as a GP.
I take the books findings with a pinch of lo-salt, for as much as we may overlook the powerful properties of Aspirin having been sensitised to it as a "staple drug" of most bathroom cabinets it is no substitute for healthy living and moderate exercise. It has however made me think about my own diet and lifestyle and perhaps the perspective of this book will lessen the gilt of taking Aspirin next time I get a headache.
