I have just read An Angel On My Shoulder by David Callinan and I really do not know how to describe it. It is about a man, Paul, who has been chosen to help to prepare the world for the coming of the new messiah. Without giving too much away, he is contacted by Angels (his Guardian Angel plus others). Now I don't necessarily dis-believe that these actually exist so the story was really quite interesting. There were dark forces at work on him as well, that were trying to prevent him succeeding and his battles with these were very convincing. Was this really happening to him or was he actually going mad? The story was quite well written and, I felt, believable.
However I found that it became very bogged down with scientific facts and a lot of discussion between Paul and some of the people he meets along the way. A lot of this discussion is really very thought provoking and while I didn't understand a lot of it, I did feel it could be worth reading again to try to understand it.
The story moved along quite nicely and as I said, I felt it was well written. Unfortunately though I have to say that, certainly at the beginning of the book, there were occasional words missing that really shouldn't have been missing hence only 4 stars. This didn't affect my enjoyment of the book though as it was obvious what the word or words should be, but I do feel that they should have been there in the first place. Perhaps the book should be read through a couple of times before publishing to try to sort out these problems. But then this is only my opinion as I don't know how this all works. One more thing I must say is that I was disappointed with the ending as it was not how I thought it would end. Who knows though Mr Callinan may have plans for a sequel. Now that would be good.
I do like this author and have read several of his books now. I would certainly read more.
