5.0 out of 5 stars A book to escape to 10 Dec 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The author loves Greece, and she conveys this sense of a country, whilst describing her perambulations around it, and various archeological digs. A book to read and re-read. I really don't know why her prose is not better known.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful 6 May 2013

I was looking for "Villa Ariadne" for my new Kindle (which doesn't exist, it turns out) and came across this book, which I didn't know. It's beautifully written and really brings out Dilys Powell's love of Greece and the Greeks. Without being maudlin or sentimental it leaves you with a tremendous feeling of a lost time, now gone. Greece was in a terrible situation after the second world war but recovered. This book gives you hope that the Greek people will be resilient enough to overcome their current woes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A favourite book 20 Mar 2013

This book caputes the essence that is Greece for the traveller. I read this book when it first came out. A year or so later a friend and I followed in the authors foot steps and explored classical Greece. The elegance of style which allowed for a considerable depth
of knowledge was a constant pleasure to us.
I reread the book recently, it had lost none of its freshness or appeal. She walks, she has considerable stamina, and she hasa simple approach to living amongst the Greek people which is the secret of the books success for me.
