Product Description

A father’s sins. A daughter’s loyalty. A lover’s protection.

When a charming CIA agent shows up on her doorstep, lawyer Abigail Mason finds herself drawn into the search for a man she had written off long before--her estranged father. Her father’s caught in the agency’s crosshairs, and she’ll do all that she can to figure out just what he’s done.

Agent James Riley knew that the stubborn, tough-as-nails attorney would be a thorn in his side, but he never guessed that he’d feel an undeniable attraction to her. To keep Abigail from stumbling alone into a web of international espionage and danger, he’ll need to bring her into his search and keep her close. But when a madman singles her out as the one who should pay for her father’s sins, Riley will do all he can to protect the woman who’s claimed her heart.

About the Author

Born and raised in Southern California, Jamie Michele spent the majority of her childhood immersed in books, dance classes, and community theater. After she studied biology at Scripps College, her love of animals led her to the roles of veterinary technician and zookeeper. While working as an “edzoocator” for the Maryland Zoo’s mobile education unit in 2007, she shifted her focus to writing. The result was Romance or Retribution (now published as An Affair of Vengeance), which went on to win a prestigious 2009 Golden Heart Award from the Romance Writers of America. An Affair of Deceit is her second novel.

More About the Author

Award-winning romance writer and former zookeeper Jamie Michele has wrestled a giant python, hand-captured a rogue vulture, and brushed the teeth of an alligator, but when she decided to write a novel, she did the unexpected: she didn't write about animals. Instead, she indulged her long fascination with international espionage, merging it with her deep knowledge of the trials of love to produce AN AFFAIR OF VENGEANCE (Montlake Romance 2012), winner of a prestigious Golden Heart from the Romance Writers of America. Now trapped in a very boring suburb, Jamie writes sexy, page-turning romances while managing her own little zoo, which consists of three cats and two exceedingly handsome great apes.

3.0 out of 5 stars Romantic suspense - nothing special 28 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is a romantic suspense book where the romance is as important as the suspense element, maybe even more so. It's similar to a lot of books in this genre. The two main protagonists have issues from the past which affect their ability to commit and neither of them trust each other because of the situation. Abigail is an up-tight attorney who has abandonment issues from the departure of her father and James Riley is aware that his role within the CIA makes him vulnerable and he cannot risk a permanent relationship. Abigail also has difficulties in engaging with her mother whilst Riley may be too reliant on his. You can work out where their relationship is going by the end (this is a ROMANTIC suspense novel, after all).

The plot takes a lot of swallowing. Abigail's father has disappeared and even though she has not seen him since her childhood she gets involved in trying to find him, especially when she realises that he is a CIA spymaster. Eventually the bad guys are also after Abigail and she teams up with the CIA to find out what is happening. It is good to have a heroine who is able to win at fighting because of her knowledge of martial arts but a bit sad that the author has teamed that with her Chinese mother and created a bit of a stereotype (it was also disappointing that despite her skill she usually had to be rescued by a man). The plot doesn't make much sense in the end and rather depends on the villain being mentally unstable to explain some of the inconsistencies. If you ignore logic and reality the action part of the story will pull you along at a nice pace.

The book is pulled down by the plot holes but might still have achieved four stars because of pace and readability had it not been for two issues. The first is a result of this being an American book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Romantic Thriller 28 April 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is the first of Jamie Michele's books I have read and it certainly wont be the last. This is a top notch thriller which could hold it's own in the genre. Abigail Mason's father has gone missing, which is a bit of a surprise to her. This is because, as far as she is concerned, he has been missing for 20 years. Now he has completely dropped off the radar and the CIA are looking for him. In comes Agent James Riley who is tasked with finding him. As this is a romantic suspense it will not come as a surprise to learnt that the pair have an increasing attraction to each other. This, however, fits in well and the two stories work together. There are thrills and spills aplenty and the action takes place worldwide. The author demonstrates a good knowledge of the locations and describes them well. There is definitely tension and suspense in this book and some things I just did not see coming. An explosive finish adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.

The only thing I would say that in this book there are a couple of sections of adult content that you need to be aware of. otherwise an excellent book which I would highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars A cocktail of suspense and romance 8 Jun 2013
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Abigail Mason is a district attorney who gives the appearance of being wedded to her job. She has little time for the young and charming CIA agent who shadows her and starts asking questions about her father who abandoned her and her mother twenty or so years ago when they were living in Taiwan. Abigail has resented her father for the trauma he put both her and her mother through for so long, so why does James Riley, who is a trained psychologist, have such an interest in his current whereabouts? What has her father done to evoke such an interest, and how and why can she help the CIA track him down? Abigail tries everything in her power to thwart the strong attraction she begins to feel towards James, and unknown to her he starts to feel the same. As the story develops so do their feelings for each other. Side by side with this Abigail seeks to become more and more involved in the investigation into the disappearance of her father. As a consequence she finds herself becoming sucked into a situation far more dangerous than she ever envisaged; dangerous not only for herself but for those she holds dear. A fairly thin storyline, rather too drawn out, but with some steamy sexual passages which develop along with story - so be warned.

3.0 out of 5 stars Love story or crime thriller??/ 17 July 2013

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was expecting more of an in-depth crime/ investigative thriller, but feel this is really a fairly routine 'love story' pretending to be a thriller - it was ok, but a bit disappointing!

1.0 out of 5 stars Tosh 6 July 2013
By Dons83
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What a load of rubbish! It was a unbelievable romance story (the "spy" part was purely incidental) - at one point Abigail kicks Riley in the balls (and she's an unarmed combat specialist so it's going to hurt), the next day she breaks his nose and later they go to bed! I gave it one star because I couldn't give it less.

Uninspiring dialogue between characters. Not a page turner by any means. This was a plod from the beginning and didn't improve as the story unfolded.
