About the Author

Born and raised in Southern California, Jamie Michele spent the majority of her childhood immersed in books, dance classes, and community theater. After she studied biology at Scripps College, her love of animals led her to the roles of veterinary technician and zookeeper. While working as an “edzoocator” for the Maryland Zoo’s mobile education unit in 2007, she shifted her focus to writing. The result was Romance or Retribution (now published as An Affair of Vengeance), which went on to win a prestigious 2009 Golden Heart Award from the Romance Writers of America. An Affair of Deceit is her second novel.

More About the Author

Award-winning romance writer and former zookeeper Jamie Michele has wrestled a giant python, hand-captured a rogue vulture, and brushed the teeth of an alligator, but when she decided to write a novel, she did the unexpected: she didn't write about animals. Instead, she indulged her long fascination with international espionage, merging it with her deep knowledge of the trials of love to produce AN AFFAIR OF VENGEANCE (Montlake Romance 2012), winner of a prestigious Golden Heart from the Romance Writers of America. Now trapped in a very boring suburb, Jamie writes sexy, page-turning romances while managing her own little zoo, which consists of three cats and two exceedingly handsome great apes.

This is a romantic suspense book where the romance is as important as the suspense element, maybe even more so. It's similar to a lot of books in this genre. The two main protagonists have issues from the past which affect their ability to commit and neither of them trust each other because of the situation. Abigail is an up-tight attorney who has abandonment issues from the departure of her father and James Riley is aware that his role within the CIA makes him vulnerable and he cannot risk a permanent relationship. Abigail also has difficulties in engaging with her mother whilst Riley may be too reliant on his. You can work out where their relationship is going by the end (this is a ROMANTIC suspense novel, after all).

The plot takes a lot of swallowing. Abigail's father has disappeared and even though she has not seen him since her childhood she gets involved in trying to find him, especially when she realises that he is a CIA spymaster. Eventually the bad guys are also after Abigail and she teams up with the CIA to find out what is happening. It is good to have a heroine who is able to win at fighting because of her knowledge of martial arts but a bit sad that the author has teamed that with her Chinese mother and created a bit of a stereotype (it was also disappointing that despite her skill she usually had to be rescued by a man). The plot doesn't make much sense in the end and rather depends on the villain being mentally unstable to explain some of the inconsistencies. If you ignore logic and reality the action part of the story will pull you along at a nice pace.

The book is pulled down by the plot holes but might still have achieved four stars because of pace and readability had it not been for two issues. The first is a result of this being an American book.

This is the first of Jamie Michele's books I have read and it certainly wont be the last. This is a top notch thriller which could hold it's own in the genre. Abigail Mason's father has gone missing, which is a bit of a surprise to her. This is because, as far as she is concerned, he has been missing for 20 years. Now he has completely dropped off the radar and the CIA are looking for him. In comes Agent James Riley who is tasked with finding him. As this is a romantic suspense it will not come as a surprise to learnt that the pair have an increasing attraction to each other. This, however, fits in well and the two stories work together. There are thrills and spills aplenty and the action takes place worldwide. The author demonstrates a good knowledge of the locations and describes them well. There is definitely tension and suspense in this book and some things I just did not see coming. An explosive finish adds to the overall enjoyment of the book.

The only thing I would say that in this book there are a couple of sections of adult content that you need to be aware of. otherwise an excellent book which I would highly recommend.

It's the first book I've read by Jamie Michele,( this is the authors second novel), with new authors I always keep an open mind till I've read the book.

Abigail Mason is a lawyer and loves her work. Unfortunately her personal life isn't the best as her father has been missing for 20yrs and the relationship she has with her mother is very strained due to how she treated her when she was a child.

Now the CIA want to know where her father is, so she now has Agent James Riley in her life, he questions her mother and this is how she finds out that her mother has been lying to her. Abigail finds the agent both charming and annoying and at times she feels like she could kill him.

Abigail takes a trip to France where she gets into trouble, she's walked into an area where she shouldn't have been and then suddenly wake up where she finds herself tied to a chair with a throbbing headache and is being interrogated by someone who is standing behind a bright light. This is where Abagail's journey and trouble really starts.

not going to say anything else as I don't want to spoil it for other readers.

The author's main two characters I found had a lot of depth and they grew on you. The storyline could have been a little better in places.

I found this book a little slow to start with but once it got going and the pace of the story started to quicken it was fine.

Besides being a criminal story there is romance involved so be warned,(and is explicit in areas), but the two parts of the story do work well together.

I enjoyed the book and found it to be a compulsive read once the slow start was out of the way.

I started An affair of Deceit before I realised it was the second in the sequel to An Affair of Vengeance and I think I would have enjoyed it much more had I read this first. In saying that it is certainly good enough as a stand alone. Attorney Abigail Mason is not enamoured of her father, a spymaster who deserted hertwenty years before; neither is she impressed with the CIA investigator asking questions about his affairs. However,a father is a father and she wants to know what he has done or not done to involve the CIA in her life. Agent James Riley needs her cooperation to track down his target. What he does not realise is that together they will uncover a startling past and even as he tries to get Abigail to take a back seat, she has to find answers.

Naturally this means a romantic interest, complex worldwide action (good research here), as they find that he and another arns dealer (and the arms) have all vanished. There is a great finish that sneaks up on you so carry on reading - this will be worth it, Recommended read for thriller readers everywhere.
