Book Description

What nutritional advice to offer parents of young children? What foods are best when illness intrudes? Which complementary health measures to choose?
Although many parents and professionals steer children towards healthy eating, sometimes outside guidance is required. Where to turn to for informed advice?
An A-Z of Children's Health is a guide to health problems for babies, children and adolescents. Aimed at health professionals and parents alike, it covers underlying factors in each condition, symptoms, dietary advice, supplement suggestions and general tips and information. There is an extensive appendix with contacts for many useful organisations and suppliers, how to find a practitioner and further reading.
Current rising awareness of the impact of food on children's health will mean that this, the first book of its kind in the UK, will be an invaluable handbook.

From the Publisher

Food is fast becoming a political and personal issue. What is in our food, which foods we eat and how much will go a long way to determining present and future health. The obese undernourished child is a paradoxical yet not uncommon image of the modern age. Most children eat about 60% 'junk food' which lacks vitamins and minerals and affects appetite control. Many diets are low in protein and essential fatty acids, whilst high in sugar, salt, saturated fats and refined carbohydrates. Young children need lots of of energy for growth, play and learning. Most get this from 'short burst' refined foods, eg cola and crisps rather than sustainable sources like fruit and wholegrains. Where to turn to for informed advice? An A-Z of Children's Health.

From the Author

I decided to write this book during my nutitrition training when it became apparent that there were no books specifically aimed at children's health from an holistic viewpoint. There seemed to be lots of recipe books but nothing addressing a therapeutic role for food.
Gathering knowledge from adult sources is unsatisfactory for children. You cannot just scale it down. Children experience many of the same conditions as adults but some are unique and all respond to a different approach. Symptoms, bodily reactions and healing are very different in children.
The aim of the book is to provide a quick reference guide to childhood health problems from birth to 16 years. Teenagers are so often left out and they have their own specific health problems. It is primarily for parents but also to provide a basis from which nutritionists can work.
The approach is one of a nutritional therapist, looking at possible underlying causes, dietary changes and suggested supplements for correction of imbalances. There is extensive information in the appendix including some suggestions for other alternative therapies. Reference to gender is random and applies to both sexes in most cases.
Nutrition is at last receiving more attention as a fundamental way to ensure health and to correct 'dis-ease' in the body. Many adults who consult a nutritionist have years of problems to correct, but children are less complicated and respond quickly to quite minor alterations in diet and lifestyle.
