Book Description

Set during the Second World War in Liverpool, this is a brand new Maureen Lee - written specially for the World Book Day Quick Reads promotion.

Product Description

On 3rd September 1939, Amy Browning decided to start writing a diary. It was a momentous day for so many reasons: it was Amy's 18th birthday; her sister had just given birth to a baby boy; and on the radio it was announced that Great Britain was now at war with Germany.

For a while, life didn't change very much for Amy. Living with her family in Opal Street, Liverpool, Amy and her friend both got jobs at a factory, and spent their free time looking round the shops, or watching the ships being loaded at the docks. But as the months went by, things began to change. The bombing started, and Amy's fears grew for her brother, fighting in France, and her boyfriend Ian, in the RAF...

4.0 out of 5 stars A quick but satisfying read 9 Feb 2012
By C. Colley TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Fans of Maureen Lee will be familiar with the setting and theme of this short story.
Set in Liverpool, Amy's Diary follows Amy Browning and her family through the Second World War.
The war breaks out on Amy's 18th birthday and after receiving a gift of a lovely notebook form her sister, she decides to keep a diary and write a bit each week until the war is over. Amy records how the war affected her family and friends as well as finding her own way through a dangerous time.
I found this a simple but satisfying story. In 105 pages a lot happens to Amy and her family. I liked the characters and I was able to get a good sense of what it was like to live during that time.

Maureen Lee is an expert at weaving a tale of ordinary Liverpool folk into an enthralling read that is very hard to put down, and always leaves the reader wanting more. This mini book is Maureen Lee at her best. I look forward to her next book with anticipation

3.0 out of 5 stars An aga saga in a short story 5 Mar 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
You would think that something called a diary would actually be written like a diary. Instead this is written in chapters, with diary type entries in a prose format. It would have been better to have done a diary style. Amy is 18 at the outbreak of WW2, living in Liverpool, gets work in the office of a munitions factory, has a brother and boyfriend at war and records her thoughts and events in a notebook given to her by her sister on her birthday. Average, aga saga type story.
