Format:Audio CD
Amy Beach's is a warmly attractive late romantic piano concerto. It plumbs no great depths or heights but never fails to hold the attention especially in its lyrical opening movement. In the second movement scherzo the piano never once pauses for breath. It all sounds fiendishly difficult to play but this is a tremendous performance and very well-recorded. This is only the second piano concerto by a woman that I'm familiar with, the other being Clara Schumann's, but Beach's is the more impressive work. The symphony has the same warm, ardent appeal although Mrs Beach's thematic material, based on Irish folk tunes, doesn't quite linger in the mind. It seems that marriage got in the way of Amy's performing and composing, which is a pity as you get the impression that had she essayed further concertos and symphonies she might have gone from strength to strength. Highly recommended.

This is a great album, which wears its heart firmly on its sleeve! I defy you to listen to the first movement of the Piano Concerto, and not be blown away, or overwhelmed by the lush, rich tones of the Symphony flooding over you. The piano playing is totally committed, and the orchestration provides its own backdrop of colour: an irresistible combination. The Symphony's folk music roots give the piece warmth and colour, and you can luxuriate in its sumptuous melodies and marvel at its broad, deep and memorable musical canvas: wonderfully atmospheric and richly romantic. Together, these pieces provide a lively and melodic ocean of sound and possibility. Get your swimsuit now!

Another winner in Naxos's excellent American Classics series! This series from Naxos is bringing so much worthwhile and highly enjoyable music to light.
The playing and recording are very good, but the quality of the piano unfortunately does not quite match the superb quality of Alan Feinberg's pianism. (I have his wonderful trio of Argo CDs).
Very listenable, friendly music, and at Naxos prices, not to be omitted from your collection.
