Great for Short Trips 2 July 2010
Format:Paperback
We've used many encounter guides and find them perfect for short weekend trips. The larger books mean you spend more time reading than doing. If you're after something which tells you the key things and provides some useful and interesting information, this is the book for you. The only criticism is that the Lonely Planet maps can be a bit disappointing, BUT if you've got a free map from your hotel or tourist office, you'll be sorted.

Good book...bad maps 10 April 2010
Format:Paperback
I would have given this book 5 stars as it is very informative and yet compact. However, the maps don't have all the street names in them. I understand this for the maps printed inside the book, as Amsterdam is packed with small streets and alleys. However, the pull-out map was at times useless - and very frustrating - when street names were missing. Furthermore, there were areas covered on the internal maps which weren't on the larger pull-out map. Again, this way very frustrating and I ended up getting another map.

By Faraneh
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic little introduction to exploring Amsterdam for a day or two or if you are fairly familiar with the city already, if your stay is longer, I would recommend a more in depth guide. The maps were useful as was the points of interest in the various parts of the city . It did lack good restaurant recommendations and I missed the hints and tips that you get with more comprehensive Lonely Plant guide but really for a short visit, it was more than adequate. Highly recommend this book if your stay is brief.
