Amazon.co.uk Review

Breaking up is hard to do but sometimes the aftermath can shine a light on the individuals and just what they brought to the mix. Over the course of five albums (three of which are certified hip-hop classics), Q-Tip, the dominant wordsmith and resident sex symbol of A Tribe Called Quest, was the guy with the goods. With his adenoidal tone and nimble way with a rhyme, he was the focus of much of the attention Tribe justifiably received. Yet left to his own devices, Tip falls short and Amplified is not the triumph fans might have expected. Part of the fault lies in the production, which with the exception of two great cuts (both produced by DJ Scratch), is provided by Tip and partner J.D., who also worked the last two (weak) Tribe CDs as part of te Ummah production team. Tip's new sound is typified by the revved up, sexy push and pull of his smash "Vivrant Thing", But that song's sound and subject matter--sex--is the main theme throughout this album. True, Tip is playful and pointed, but the lyrics are remarkably linear for a guy who once dubbed himself "abstract" and the similarity of the drum patterns and tempo start to grow tiresome. Sadly, what should have been a breakthrough solo debut from a truly gifted artist only makes you yearn for the subtle jazzy touches and deadpan retorts former Tribe members Ali Shaheed Muhammed and Phife Dog provided. --Amy Linden

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathe, stop, buy, listen and get vivrant, 19 May 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Amplified (Audio CD)
Anyone who thought Q-Tip might not deliver the goods when going solo has been proved seriously wrong. If you liked the flava of the two awesome singles Breathe & Stop and Vivrant Thing you will love this album. A Tribe Called Quest were hip hop legends, their first three albums all regarded as classics by fans and critics alike, but Tips solo album is of such high standard that Phife and Shaheed are hardly missed. Tips change in style (aiming for the R&B crossover market) provides a different side to his abstract persona. Sex is the main subject but this album can be played in the car, or at a party as well as the bedroom. Tip delivers tight lyrics over rugged, stripped down beats. Apart from the two singles highlights include Movin With U, Lets Ride, All In and the Spanish flavoured Do It. Yet its hard to spot a filler, all tracks come recommended. All good - well worth a listen. Breathe, stop, listen and get vivrant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately background music, in a very good way, 12 Aug 2001
This review is from: Amplified [VINYL] (Vinyl)
The first time I put this CD on, I wasn't too impressed with it, but that's only because I was listening to the music alone and in-depth. This was a mistake. I then gave it another try while I was playing on my Playstation, and it sounded ten-fold better. It's definately a CD you want playing underneath general conversationwhen you have a few people round, or whilst your doing something that requires your attention, because the jazzy beats and rythmic lyrics seem to slip into the back of your mind easier, and any production slip-ups are made unoticeable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing like Tribe Called Quest but enjoyable, 22 Aug 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Amplified (Audio CD)
This album is fun, sexy music. It's not 'old skool' and Tribe called Quest fans will be dissapointed if they were hoping for more of the same. Slightly repetitive in parts, but you have to love "Breathe and Stop", the Latino licks on "do it", and the semi-insane rantings of Busta Rhymes on his collaboration, at the end of the track, with Q-Tip cracking up in the background at least recaptures the lightness of the old skool before it went gangsta. Feel good, love-making music.
