Product Description

Product Description

The biggest growth area in digital photography today is the digital SLR and more advanced (non-SLR) digital cameras which give serious amateurs, pros, semi-pros and students more control over the quality of their images. With prices dropping for these high-end cameras, serious photographers are making the transition to this new technology more quickly than ever. This transition from film to digital, however, creates new challenges and new opportunities for photographers. This guide provides photographers with tips on overcoming new challenges of operation and technique and shows them how to take advantage of their new creative freedom and ability to transform what was first captured into a true depiction of what they intended when the shutter was snapped.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big let down, 17 Jan 2005
By R. Emmons - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Amphoto's Guide to Creative Digital Photography: Techniques for Mastering Your Advanced Digital Camera (Paperback)
I'm not surprised that no-one else has reviewed this book, as it was a great disappointment to me, even though I'm part of the intended audience - a professional photographer changing from film to digital. Unfortunately I found little new information here, and what I did find was not clearly enough explained for me to be able to apply. Perhaps the greatest disappointment, though, are the images. I never fail to be inspired by images in other Amphoto publications, but those in this book are too ordinary to warrant publication or emulation. Guess I'll go back to learning the hard way - by trial and error.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Intro for those new to the field, 18 Mar 2005
By Larry Dickerson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Amphoto's Guide to Creative Digital Photography: Techniques for Mastering Your Advanced Digital Camera (Paperback)
This title of this book is a little misleading. It isn't really a guide to "Creative" digital photography, and it doesn't really describe techniques for "Mastering" a digital SLR camera. Nevertheless, it is a comprehensive overview of digital photography and the various processes that distinguish it from film photography. A more accurate title might be "Amphoto's Introductory Guide to Digital Photography." In other words, the book is a good primer for those new to the field or those considering the possibility of switching from film to digital. It is not a book about creative techniques; it does not go into depth on any specific technique; and the information it discusses is not limited to SLR cameras. The book touches on many of the features that one might wish to consider when choosing a digital camera, although not in any organized way. It also touches on many of the techniques that can be used to manipulate digital images using photo editing software, but again, not in great detail. In short, the book is a good introduction to the subject, but not something you are going to keep on your bookshelf for future reference.
