4.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Creature Feature 5 Jun 2014
This terrific Creature Feature is more entertaining than many Hollywood blockbuster monster movies. With a trim running time of 80 minutes or so there's no time for padding. The plot ticks the boxes of many monster movies but features a few unexpected plot twists. It's also brave enough not to adhere to the tried and trusted ( but oh so predicable) denouement.

The first few minutes consist of holiday video footage and I feared I was about to watch another terrible found footage movie. Don't worry we soon have the first nice twist and we're into a well produced "proper" movie. Picture and sound quality are excellent. The special effects are top notch. Both the gore effects and the impressive creature/monster. If you've seen some of the SyFy original features you'll know that not all modern special effects are good.

Interesting to see Michael Pare as the hero. I haven't seen him since his 1980's hay day. Great to note that unlike some other 80's actors he hasn't resorted to plastic surgery so can still use a range of facial expressions. Mickey Rourke, Stallone et al take note!!

If you enjoy this type of movie this is a hidden gem which I'm sure you'll enjoy.

2.0 out of 5 stars Aircraft [rental] 7 Sep 2014
Brian Yuzna has made many movies featuring horrible things happening to ordinary people. And that's where Amphibious falls flat, because the slave drivers working in middle of the ocean (!) really aren't sympathetic. They're absurdly detestable, to the point its implied two are rapists... er, we already know they're bad people. They have slaves, you know?

The leader is the most absurdly quasi-politically powerful movie villain since Alligator 2. Even though his base has no escape vessels (!) and those scared into following him could kill him by simply not taking their boats near his base. But somehow even the police are under his influence.

Most slaves presented here have stockholm syndrome, or something, and follow the boss almost willingingly, so there's little sympathy there.

There's some good emotional content eventually, but beyond that its just a generic creature feature, and very predictable. Poseidon Rex, which is advertised on the DVD, is considerably better.

This was filmed in 3d back in 2010. It was not a conversion, instead it was filmed in native 3d. It was a low budget film to be sure but they made the best of what they had and it's a decent traditional monster on the loose film. When you do languages on this one it says 'german , Italy , german, but in fact it has NO Italian language tracks , the second one is a English track. Michael Pare leads the cast here and he's the only one you will know. The effects are very good on this one, they are mix of the old traditional robotic ones and cgi , (computer generated effects). They are quite effective too. If you enjoyed the MANY low budget films of the past featuring giant menacing creature then this one is for you. In this case it's a eupertrid , or giant sea scorpion. they dominated the oceans , long before the dinosaurs were around. Some of them came onto land and became the scorpions we know. In fact scorpions were t he first land animals. The action mainly takes place at a sea platform. Which is fine.I had recently watched 'the carra' or the crabs on dvd and it was made in 1981. It had no cgi but it was a fine low budget monster film. This is like that , only the effects are much better of course. I am a sucker for those big monsters on the loose films . so this was a fun ride for me. If you are a snob and don't like those old movies like 'taratula' of the crab monsters. then you might not like this one. In fact I don't think anyone has made a film like this for the big screen, except on tv, mainly the sci fi channel that is. But this is a true b movie , in every way , with a platform of villains and a big monster ready to eat them all. Theblu ray looks great and the 3d is really excellent. with NO ghosting on my , active 3d tv and glasses. Read more ›
