Book Description

Does your real age match the age you feel?

When do we reach middle age?

When, if ever, are we old?

The way we age and the way we perceive age has changed radically. As we embrace new experiences, relationships and gadgets, we barely stop to look at our watches let alone consider whether our behaviour is 'age appropriate'.

In this provocative and timely book, Catherine Mayer looks at the forces that created amortality - the term she coined to describe the phenomenon of living agelessly. As she follows this social epidemic through generations and across continents, she reveals its profound impact on society, our careers, our families and ourselves.

Why be defined by numbers?

Are you amortal?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and timely work 16 May 2011
Format:Paperback
I too am bemused by the 'opinion' expressed by Padraig. Witty, assured, and impressively researched, this is a deeply intelligent investigation of a phenomenon that is changing our world. Featuring interviews with figures as diverse as roller-blading pensioners and the Archbishop of Canterbury, and looking at areas ranging from microbiology to the politics of being a woman in Hollywood, Mayer ably demonstrates how even though 'amortality' - or the refusal to grow old - can on occasion seem freakishly futuristic (ready for hormone-optimisation treatment in Las Vegas anyone?) it is impacting on us all through its revolutionisation of both the political and private aspects of our life. Using the example of her father, who in his eighties still regularly goes deep sea diving, she compelling invokes underwater imagery to describe the way the notional 'seven ages of man' are now dissolving, so that cultural expectations of who we are are 'swirling and re-forming like shoals of glassfish catching the currents'. The resulting disconnect between who we are and who we imagine ourselves to be is a key issue for the twenty first century. Mayer has more than proved herself the author to deal with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read 17 May 2011

This is one of the most original and interesting books I've read in a long time. I ordered a copy after seeing an interview with the author as the whole idea of living agelessly really struck a chord with me. I'm in my early 60s and, like so many of my friends, am in good health and socially active.
The author has found a subject that is so relevant to our generation. We see ageless living all around us these days (just look at Madonna, Mick Jagger or Richard Branson!) but this is the first book about it.
I find the idea of someone in their 60s having the same lifestyle as a 20-yr-old so fascinating - and this just wouldn't have happened a generation ago - they might both be starting a new relationship, downloading from iTunes, or setting up a new business.
The author talks about where it all started (Hollywood) and what ageless living means to us as individuals, the family, our working lives (should we retire or keep going?), and bigger issues like the economy. Can countries really cope with a population living to be over 100?
For me, this is a really important book that opens up debate about what ageless living means for us, and future generations. If you want to read something that will make you think about one of the biggest issues affecting us today, this is the book for you!

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating read, rich in insight 16 May 2011
Format:Paperback
Having read this book, which nails a very contemporary phenomenon with wit, compassion and accuracy, I am wholly bemused by Padraig's review. In Amortality, Mayer has spliced a number of easily recognisable tendencies - eternal teenagerdom, cosmetic enhancement, me-centredness, fear of death - into a enlightening thesis. To examine the age in which you live with this kind of detachment is not easy, and Meyer freely admits that she is as susceptible as the rest of us to the lure of amortality. But self-knowledge can be passed on, and Meyer does this with warmth and elegance. Enjoy!
