Book Description
On the night of the St Patrick celebrations in 1990, some of the world’s most famous and valuable paintings were stolen from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. They were never recovered, and there were no clues as to their whereabouts – that is until now. When Boston attorney Scott Finn takes on well-known thief, Devon Malley as a client, he gets much more than he bargained for. Not only is he asked to care for Devon’s teenaged daughter, Sally, while Devon awaits bail, but his investigations into what he believed was a case of petty theft, lead him to the underworld of Boston’s organized crime gangs, links with the IRA and the realization that he may be close to solving the mystery of the stolen paintings all those years ago. I must confess that I approached this book with a lot of apprehension. The marketing compares the author to John Grisham. Now time for guilty secret confession. I have read most of Grisham's work and whilst reading his books I have to admit they are compulsive. They are also instantly forgettable and I have never had the urge to re-read any of his work. There were early signs in "Among Thieves" that it might conform to this formulaic mode (explaining that 75% is equivalent to 3 out of 4 for example). This affects only the first few pages however and the novel quickly picks up and drags the reader along at a cracking pace.
I think the marketing does Mr Hosp a disservice. His work is much better than Grisham's. His characters are believable (some being likeable and others completely awful, whilst some are a mix). The story is enthralling and the dialogue is snappy and witty.
If I had to make a comparison it would be with the early work of Dennis Lehane. Like him Hosp uses the city of Boston as an extra "character" sand this profound role for the location gives the book more depth. I would caution that Hosp is not in Lehane's league, but then very few writers could claim to be.
Hosp has produced a compelling novel which is based on a conjecture of what may have happened in a real life crime. He produces a believable world with what appears to me an accurate portrayal of the influence of local politics, links to the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and the inter-agency rivalry that seems to bedevil the American justice system. One note of caution is that the portrayal of violence is quite graphic and certainly not for the squeamish
If you want a good read that will stay with you for a long time then I recommend this book

I've read and enjoyed all David Hosp's stories and I think in Scott Finn he has created a character to rival Connelly's Harry Bosch or Mickey Haller. In 'Among Thieves' the central three characters are joined by the feisty Sally who I hope will figure in future books. Yes, these characters are drawn from well used larger than life stereotypes but for all that they are very likeable, poor boy makes good, foul mouthed beautiful mega rich dame, giant scarred ex cop and now a teenager from a broken home with issues. The plot has no superfluous padding and the action is swift while the story gives an interesting and plausible slant on a factual robbery. Highly recommended.

Starting with a real life theft, one which has never been solved, Hosp imagines a terrific tale to explain it. The story is ingenious, if at times a little hard to follow, and very well paced, and you will want to know how it all turns out. The gradual unfolding of the plot, which approaches the theft from both past and present, allows the characters some real depth, and Hosp never has to resort to excessive cliffhanger endings to keep you reading.
The main character, Scott Finn, looks to have at least another book in him, with his complex background, and Hosp manages to avoid bland stereotypes with the other characters, all of which adds to the interest. He may struggle to come up with a more implacable and ruthless (but still believable) villian, though.
This really is an accomplished legal/detective thriller. I gather this is Hosp's 3rd book, and I will certainly be seeking out the others, and looking forward to the next. If you have read and enjoyed Scott Turow, Michael Connolly or John Grisham, then I recommend this without reservation.

Among Thieves tells the story of a major art robbery in Boston in 1990, carried out by local criminals working with the IRA. The robbery itself is somewhat based on fact and the rest is Hosp's imagining of who was behind the theft and why.
In the present day, an IRA fanatic wants the paintings in a desperate bid to sell them. Hosp's main protagonist, lawyer Scott Finn, becomes involved as he ends up defending one of the men originally involved in the heist.
The book is reasonably well told, but I had a hard time believing in a terrorist group, barely still functioning, honestly thinking they could get hold of the stolen art and sell it to fund their barely ongoing war. The story starts fairly promisingly, but doesn't really develop enough over its 360-odd pages. For example, two police officers are introduced and given a fair amount of backstory, but then disappear for a massive chunk of the book only to reappear briefly again at the end.
At the other end, the IRA soldier in Boston to secure the paintings, Liam Killbranish, is under-developed. He's a cold blooded killer for reasons that are covered a little, but it would have been good to have a bit more to him than that.
Scott Finn is a lawyer, but doesn't have much to do when it comes to practicing law. He behaves more as a private detective, along with his investigator, than a defence attorney much of the time. He is from the bad streets of Boston (we know this as we are frequently reminded of it) and you expect something of a maverick attitude and a few shady brushes with the law, but it just doesn't happen. Instead Finn seems a bit bland and wet. I didn't find myself particularly warming to him.

Not as good as I expected from 1 and 3
Not much to say as I immediately forgot this book which is not true of the first one which I enjoyed, but this one was slow and a bit boring - not sure why!
