From the brutal murder in the first chapter, this thriller races along at a frightening pace. The decapitated corpse is discovered by a couple about to enjoy a canoe trip along the river and as is the way with Laymons writing, things will never be quite the same for Faye and Bass. They, along with you the reader, are thrown into the twisting plot of this book, which holds your attention until the very last minute. As has been the case with other Laymon characters and plot lines i.e. "In The Dark," the author manages to manipulate seemingly ordinary people into doing the most unexpected things. However his writing is convincing enough for the reader to suspend disbelief until the end. The events within this book happen over a very short time period, this only adds to the tension and compliments the content. Throw in some dark humour and Laymons assortment of oddball characters playing 'bit-parts' and the book delivers a nice chunk of escapism for a few hours - with some surprising plot twists. Whether he's writing horror of the monster variety or horror of the human variety if you're a fan of this genre - give him a try.

I'v e read the vast majority of Laymon's work - this book has a familiar feel and is a true Laymon, keeping you gripped to the end. It's good but it ain't a classic like many others have been.

Still - Laymon's worst is better than Kings best !

Now I have to say, this is a slightly different approach than Laymon usually takes... a headless corpse of a beautiful woman is found at the local tourist spot and the local sheriff and his daughter-in-law have to find the killer. This story is written mainly from the point of view of Pac the local policewoman and Laymon has this amazing ability to take on the persona of young beautiful, independent women. This book I can only sum up as charming, I totally disagree with the previous readers comments, I think this book shows Laymon's talent not only as a horror but as a thriller writer.... this would make a great movie!!
