4.0 out of 5 stars Essential viewing for all pylon enthusiasts. 20 Jun 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
The mouthwatering footage of electricity pylons in this film makes it worth the money on its own.The pylon count is EASILY the highest I have ever seen in any film. The plot is a fairly straightforward love story starring Rachel Griffiths and Pete Postlethwaite, but it's the electricity pylons who are the real stars. The only real criticism I would have is that during a scene where Rachel Griffiths climbs up a pylon, when not actually being employed as a pylon painter, there ought to have been a safety warning scrolling across the screen telling viewers not to follow this irresponsible example. Viewers should also be warned that there are scenes of FORNICATION and FRONTAL NUDITY, although the former is not very explicit, and the latter is tastefully shot. All the same, it could be a bit embarrassing if watching with old people or people with a very sheltered upbringing. Tantalisingly, despite having watched the film three times, I have been unable to make out the numbers of any of the pylons, but I suppose it's probably a deliberate ploy by director Sam Miller to keep his audience wanting more.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice urban landscaping, dreadful plot 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
Format:VHS Tape
What a disappointment! Started well, nice pylons, but the plot quickly lost all direction and moved from scene to scene of more pylon painting without any plot tension or idea of where it was all going. I found some of the love scenes wincingly trite (walking naked through running water and shouting "I love you"). There were odd scenes that were beautifully done, but I gave up before the end.

If you want a really brilliant film about the north starring Pete Postlethwaite, watch "Brassed Off". Like "Giants" it veers around between social realism and idealising the industrial landscape - but it finds a synthesis between the two, and is genuinely moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars Among Giants: A Giant's eye view of the human heart 30 Dec 1999
By Gregory Martin - Published on Amazon.com
Among Giants stirred my emotions like only a few other movies have done. Hidden deep, and I mean deep in the contrast of the yorkshire countryside and Ray's last chance at a meaninfgul relationship is the perfect view that only a Giant could see. By scaling the heights of the towers Ray unconsiuosly is living his view of life: robust with feeling, is a setting that few others can survive in. By adding the love intrest of Gerry he comes close to fulfilling his vision. But life is uncertain as well as unfair. Gerry's and Ray's emotional unfulfillemnt plays upon the heart like a violin. For a while Ray is at peace and like the real world life is "not always" bad. This should be the case at least once for all of us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Condition 4 Feb 2009
By R. T. Price - Published on Amazon.com
Arrived in a timely manner and was in excellent condition. Video resolution was very clear and there were no video "blemishes" that required adjusting the tracking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your dough 29 Mar 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
At US$103, this video is a waste of money. At 50cents it would be waste of money. No plot, no script and the worlds worst actor Pete Postlething.
