Book Description

5 Sep 2011 Wisden Sports Writing
There was once a time, not so long ago, where our sporting heroes were treated with veneration. Players were players and their watchers were passive. Heroes lived on pedestals - they weren't public property. This book explores the many ways this dynamic has changed over the years. From the Barmy Army's loud but loyal support of the England cricket team to the jeers that greeted our returning footballers after the World Cup, the relationship between athlete and fan is now quite dramatically different. With his usual gentle wit and subtle intelligence, renowned sports writer Patrick Collins records one year spent observing a range of different sports and their many and varied fans. From a county cricket match at Canterbury - a place that resists change - to a corporate box at Wembley - watch them eat! see them drink! - from dog racing to swimming galas, this is a wonderful and humorous look at the world of sports - and the fans who make it all possible.

4.0 out of 5 stars A review of the kindle edition 20 April 2012
By Big Jim TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
I enjoyed this book but an annoyance in the kindle edition is the regular array of what I assume to be captions for non-existent photos, usually repeating excerpts from the text. Overall I found it interesting, an easy read, but dealt more with the fan experience of events rather than an in depth look at the sort of person who attends such events. There are tantalising glimpses of folk that could have had more said about them, but because there are few interviews as such, the author's perception of the fans motivations are what come across rather than hearing it from their own mouths.

4.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL 'TRUE' SPORTS FANS. 17 Jan 2012
Format:Hardcover
The book gives an insight to the fans of various sports. Not only the media popular sports such as football, cricket and rugby but to the less glamorous ones like speedway and dog racing. It's good to hear that that some sports enthuse individuals without the need for SKY-TV or constant references on the back pages, and all too often the front pages, of our national press.
It's also great to read about the fans who don't make the headlines but make up the majority of sports' good guys e.g. The non-Barmy Army and the ones who supported England through the mess that was South Africa 2010.
My only 'moan' is that it was not long enough, hopefully Patrick Collins can find the time to write a volume 2?

5.0 out of 5 stars Sports journalism from the top drawer. 27 Mar 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I a big fan of Patrick Collins and never miss his column in the Mail on Sunday. I already have the 'Sportswriter' book and bought the new one because I thought it would be as good. Happily, I enjoyed the new one even more!
I never thought Darts or Point to Point events would be interesting but Patrick really got inside all the events and it was absolutely fascinating. ...The cricket chapters were very cleverly done but he always does cricket very well.
My book is now doing the rounds of my fellow members of our local cricket team so, unfortunately, you won't be picking any sales up there !
